A fire broke out early Monday at a plant operated by Nippon Steel Corp. in Hokkaido, northern Japan, with no reports of injuries, local authorities said.

According to the police, the fire department and Nippon Steel, the blaze occurred in a hot blast stove that sends hot air to a blast furnace for iron extraction. The fire did not spread beyond the plant, they said, adding that an investigation is under way to determine how it started.

An emergency call was made at around 12:55 a.m. by a neighbor who heard an explosion at the plant in Muroran, the fire department said.

After the atomic bomb on August 6, 1945, Hiroshima’s houses were almost completely destroyed within a 2-km radius of the hypocenter:
• Wooden structures: 90–100% obliterated by blast, firestorm, and radiation; reduced to ash or charred debris.

• Concrete/reinforced buildings: Severely damaged or collapsed; only a few (e.g., the Genbaku Dome) had partial skeletons left.

• Surrounding areas: Up to 5 km out, roofs torn off, walls cracked, windows shattered; ~70,000 of 76,000 buildings totaled or uninhabitable.
By late 1945, the city was a flattened, radioactive wasteland with virtually no livable homes.

The number of foreigners resident in Japan who moved to the Tokyo metropolitan area in 2024 outnumbered those leaving by over 16,000, setting a record-high margin, government data showed Saturday, signaling that the capital is serving as a magnet for younger workers seeking higher pay.

Excluding those who entered or left Japan, 334,659 people -- the majority in their 20s -- moved across prefectural borders in 2024, accounting for 10.1 percent of foreigners residing in Japan. A decade before, the figure was 145,535, or 7.3 percent of the total.

"No Hate Action" in Nagoya Calls for End to Unfair Discrimination Against Foreign Residents

An advocacy group called "No Hate Action" held a street campaign in Nagoya, Japan, appealing for the cessation of unfair discrimination and hateful rhetoric targeting immigrants and foreign residents.

The action was spearheaded by Ms. Seiko Nishiyama, who has been visiting and meeting with detained foreigners at the Nagoya Immigration Center for over 15 years. Supporters asserted that irregular stay residents living in Japan are part of society and that unsubstantiated rumors about foreigners must not be tolerated.

Ms. Nishiyama emphasized that exclusion only creates a society of fear, stating that fostering harmonious relationships is what will build a positive future for Japan. She also highlighted the critical need for a proper support system to welcome and integrate foreign workers.

On November 30 (today), more than 100 people gathered in front of JR Shinjuku Station in Tokyo, chanting discriminatory slogans such as immigrants should return to their own countries. However, at the same location, a counter-protest group also demonstrated, demanding an end to hate speech.
When the two groups got close to each other, police struggled to keep them separated. Although Japan needs foreign workers to address its growing population crisis, experts say such protests have a negative impact on the immigrant community.
Looking at these and similar demonstrations, there are signs that political and social polarization over immigration policy will increase in Japan in the future.

This building was completed in April 1915 under the design and supervision of Czech architect Jan Letzel, and was beloved by the citizens for its iconic green dome. When the atomic bomb exploded 160 meters southeast of the Industrial Promotion Hall at a height of 600 meters, it instantly killed everyone inside the building, which sustained immense damage and was completely burned out.

In December 1996, this structure was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List as a reminder of the horrors of the atomic bomb and as a symbol of world peace.

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has been actively communicating through social media. She posts daily on social media using her own words, with topics ranging from her daily life to government initiatives and diplomatic achievements

After the Cabinet approved a supplementary budget proposal for fiscal 2025 on Friday evening, Takaichi posted the following posts on her X account:

“We have been able to realize a proposal that gives careful consideration to ‘fiscal sustainability.’”

“We will make sure to secure the trust of the market based on the idea of ‘responsible, active fiscal policy.’”

Takaichi has over 2.36 million followers on X and posts almost daily. Although her secretaries sometimes write drafts for her on policy-related content, Takaichi essentially thinks up what to write on her own, according to a source close to the prime minister.
