This festival invites visitors to explore and enjoy the vast castle grounds after dark, with interactive light projections, food stalls, and a variety of photogenic spots.

And for the first time in 18 years visitors are finally able to catch a glimpse inside of the recently restored Honmaru Palace 🎉

Places to enjoy roses in Kansai: Hyogo Edition

Mid May to mid June is the perfect time to enjoy the lovely sight and scent of roses; though there are many beautiful places in Kansai to enjoy them, here are my favorite picks in Hyogo prefecture!

These locations are doable as day trips from Osaka/ Kyoto 🌹

Hydrangea spots you mustn’t miss in Kansai this June!

Rainy season (also known as Tsuyu) may be undesirable to many but it’s also the perfect period to enjoy clusters of vibrant hydrangeas! 💠

💠Photo 1~2: Yoshimine-dera Temple 西山善峯寺
Mountainside temple located at the northern part of Kyoto city is well known for their seasonal scenery especially their hydrangeas

💠 Photo 3~4: Mimuroto-ji Temple 三室戸寺
A popular spot in Uji, Kyoto to enjoy hydrangeas and don’t forget to make a wish with their special designed ema!

💠 Photo 5~6: Yanagidani Kannon Temple(柳谷観音)
Aside from autumn foliage, this temple recently gained popularity for its hydrangea garden and seasonal hanachozu (purification basin)

💠 Photo 7 ~8: Shukugawa Park 夙川河川敷緑地(夙川公園)
A large public park in Hyogo where you can enjoy the sight of hydrangeas & trains together.

💠 Photo 9~10 : Kobe Municipal Arboretum 神戸市立森林植物園
Spacious park in Kobe with various hiking trails and houses a variety of hydrangeas

💠 Photo 11~ 12: Maizuru Nature and Cultural Park 舞鶴自然文化園
A lesser known hydrangea spot in Kyoto that faces the sea

💠 Photo 13: Gansenji 岩船寺
Located close to the borders and often mistaken as part of Nara, however this quiet temple in Kizugawa is part of Kyoto and holds the proud title of“Kansai’s flower temple”.

💠 Photo 14~15 : Ajisaidera 観音寺
A small and quiet spot in Fukuchiyama, also known as the “hydrangea temple” of Kyoto

What scenery to expect when visiting Japan during May?

The wisteria is currently in full bloom, it’s a very popular local spot with limited parking space.

Photo 3~4: Kasuga Taisha, Nara 🪻
Late blooming wisteria at Kasuga Taisha’s botanical garden are currently at its peak, don’t miss out on wisteria themed omamori from this shrine

Photo 5: Byodoin, Kyoto🪻
Wisteria is just passed its peak but you can also enjoy green momiji scenery here too 🍃

Photo 6: Mt. Katsuragi - Azaleas 🌺
Should be reaching its peak very soon!

A rose garden in the middle of Osaka city

Photo 8: Nagai Botanical Garden 🌹
House a wide variety of roses which are cared for by volunteers and you can also enjoy nemophilia flower during late May

Temple in Nara with an extensive rose garden, there’s also a cafe in the premises selling rose themed food and drinks

Voted the best garden in Kansai region for having the most rose varieties and you can spot Mt. Hiei from here too
