Although the practice of onmyodo has been around since the 600’s the first written record we have of Ushi no Mairi Toki comes from The Tale of the Heike (平家物語, Heike Monogatari) in 1130.
It’s a LOOONG story but this gal named Hashihime was PISED and the shenanigans of some MEN. She was so pi**ed in fact that she became a demon and performed the first ushi no mairi Toki curse, described thusly, “Secluding herself in a deserted spot, she divided her long hair into five bunches and fashioned these bunches into horns. She daubed her face with vermilion and her body with cinnabar, set on her head an iron tripod with burning brands attached to its legs and held in her mouth another brand, burning at both ends.”
Diva behavior.
She becomes so powerful that when her arm is cut off by a powerful samurai years later, another Onmyodo practitioner master Seimei, uses it as a power up tool of sorts!
