Travelers at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport now have another reason not to arrive late.

Some passengers could face a 15-minute walk just to reach their domestic flight.

The new Terminal 1 North Satellite boarding facility officially opened on September 1.

And the distance is bigger than many travelers may expect.

The furthest of its six gates sits about one kilometer from the security checkpoint.

Japan Airlines is moving around 80% of its flights using the satellite area to the new facility.

That means passengers assigned to these gates need to leave themselves extra time after security.

There is another important change.

The baggage check-in deadline for affected flights has been moved to 30 minutes before departure.

For travelers carrying luggage, rushing through Haneda at the last minute could now become a serious problem.

The new facility expands airport capacity, but that extra distance could catch unprepared passengers off guard.

Millions of Japanese households are facing another painful hit at the supermarket.

Nearly 5,000 everyday food and drink products are rising in price at the same time.

Starting September 1, prices are increasing on exactly 4,923 products from 195 major manufacturers.

That is roughly three times the number recorded in the same month last year.

It also makes September the fourth-largest monthly wave of food price increases on record.

And the pressure is not ending here.

The total number of products facing price increases during 2026 is now expected to pass 20,000.

Companies are dealing with several major cost pressures at once:

• A weak yen
• Higher logistics costs
• Rising energy expenses
• Continued Middle East oil uncertainty

For families already watching every yen, another round of increases means the weekly grocery bill could become even harder to control.

The severe police officer shortage has officially deepened nationwide.

Osaka and other major forces are failing to recruit baseline personnel numbers.

The problem is becoming harder to ignore.

Police recruitment exam numbers have fallen to less than half of what they were a decade ago, leaving forces competing for fewer young applicants.

Japan’s aging population and shrinking labor pool are making that challenge even worse.

For a country known around the world for public safety, the concern is serious.

Authorities warn that if the shortage continues, maintaining current police services and public safety could become increasingly difficult.

And this is not simply about filling empty jobs.

Fewer applicants mean police departments have a smaller pool of people to choose from while still needing enough qualified officers on streets and in communities.

Japan has built a global reputation as one of the safest places to live and visit.

At 9:20 on Wednesday morning, a school principal in Nepal picked up a call from a friend in Betrawati, five miles upstream.

"He said the village was gone. Taken by the river. He told me to run."

Rajendra Dawadi had about 900 students already inside Tribhuvan Trishuli Secondary School.

Around 700 more were still coming.

Then the water started rising.

Dawadi rang the school bell and ordered teachers to move every student uphill.

But he suddenly remembered the buses.

He contacted the drivers and told them to turn back.

One bus was already on the bridge beside the school.

Dawadi told the driver to reverse.

Moments after it reached the other side, the bridge collapsed.

The students gathered uphill under a bodhi tree and watched the flood destroy their school.

All 1,643 children survived.

Two staff members did not.

In a disaster that gave them almost no time, one principal’s decisions saved an entire student body.

On March 3, 2005, Tokyo prosecutors arrested a 70-year-old man who had once been the richest person on Earth.

His name was Yoshiaki Tsutsumi.

Forbes ranked him the world’s richest person in 1987 with an estimated $20 billion fortune — and kept him at the top for four years.

He controlled a huge business empire built around Seibu Railway, real estate, Prince Hotels, ski resorts, golf courses and the Seibu Lions.

But his downfall came from hidden ownership.

Seibu Railway later admitted its shareholder records had been false for years, with shares placed under other names to meet Tokyo Stock Exchange listing rules.

Kokudo had also sold shares before the truth became public, leading prosecutors to pursue an insider-trading case.

Seibu Railway was delisted in 2004.

Three months later, Tsutsumi was arrested.

He pleaded guilty, received a suspended prison sentence and later disappeared from Forbes’ billionaire list.

Japan is paying foreigners to learn Japanese — and handing them hospital jobs when they finish.

This spring, Japan's embassy in Manila recruited 50 nurses and 300 care workers from the Philippines.

The offer is hard to ignore.

• Six months of free Japanese lessons in the Philippines
• Another six months of language training in Japan
• A daily allowance during training
• Three-to-four-year jobs in Japanese hospitals and care facilities

Japan needs the workers badly.

The health ministry estimates the country will need around 2.72 million care workers by 2040 — roughly 570,000 more than in 2022.

More than 3,300 Filipino nurse and caregiver candidates have already entered Japan through this program since 2009.

But there’s a growing concern.

While Japan needs more foreign workers, the government is also moving toward tougher rules affecting foreigners who want to settle long-term.

Japan needs hundreds of thousands more care workers.

So will Filipino workers still choose Japan if building a permanent future there becomes harder?

Japan hasn't seen this number go up in 11 years.

Until this morning.

Health ministry data shows 342,068 babies were born in Japan between January and June 2026.

That’s up 0.8% from the same period last year — an increase of 2,788 births.

It marks Japan’s first January–June rise since 2015.

The numbers include babies born to foreign nationals living in Japan.

There’s another important shift:

• Marriages increased in both 2024 and 2025.
• Tokyo recorded 2,278 more births.
• Aichi and Fukuoka also saw increases.

But the bigger picture is still worrying.

Births fell in 21 prefectures, while full-year 2025 recorded just 705,000 births — another record low.

And during the first six months of 2026, Japan recorded 778,982 deaths.

That means deaths still exceeded births by 436,914.

After years of falling births, Japan finally has one positive half-year.

On the morning of August 30, 2026, Japanese authorities issued a Level 5 Emergency Safety Assurance directive to approximately 244,000 residents across Fukui, Ono, and Katsuyama cities in Fukui Prefecture.

The emergency action followed a top-level Level 5 heavy rain special warning declared by the Japan Meteorological Agency after historic rainfall hit the region.

The situation is extremely serious.

Multiple landslides have been reported across Fukui Prefecture, while flooded roads have left vehicles stranded.

The national government has enacted the Disaster Relief Act for six affected municipalities to speed up rescue and support operations.

So far, no human casualties have been confirmed.

But authorities are warning residents not to take unnecessary risks.
