禅　The Spirit of Zen

“Zen” is often seen as a quiet practice of meditation.
But in Japan, Zen is not something you do — it is something you live.

It is the art of being fully present in each moment —breathing, seeing, and feeling without clinging or resisting.

Zen teaches that nothing is separate, and that harmony and beauty arise when we align with the natural rhythm of life —
the falling leaf, the sound of water, the stillness between breaths.

In that silence, truth reveals itself.
And we remember: everything we seek is already here.

Today, the concept of mindfulness, which has become a major movement among business leaders and thinkers in the West,
was deeply influenced by Zen philosophy —the idea that clarity, creativity, and wisdom arise from inner stillness.

Zen is not a path to enlightenment — it is enlightenment itself, unfolding in everyday life.

ありがとう　ーThank youー

The Japanese word “Arigatou” (ありがとう) is often translated as “thank you” in English.
However, its origin and meaning go far beyond a simple expression of gratitude.

The word comes from the ancient Buddhist term “Arigatashi” (有り難し) ーliterally meaning “it is difficult for something to exist.”
In other words, it refers to something rare, precious, and extraordinary.

Over time, this idea evolved into a way of expressing appreciation for things that are not taken for granted — kindness, encounters, moments, even life itself.

Unlike “Thank you”, which often focuses on the person who gave,“Arigatou” reflects a sense of awe toward existence itself —a quiet recognition that every experience and connection
is a gift that might never have been.

In this way, “Arigatou” carries the Japanese view of the world:
an awareness of impermanence (mujo), humility, and gratitude
for the delicate balance of all things.

“Arigatou” — A word that reminds us how precious each moment truly is🙏

Unfortunately, many modern Japanese people have forgotten the true meaning of “Arigatou”...

Japan’s Two Moon Festivals — “Jūgoya” and “Jūsan’ya”

In Japan, the moon is more than light in the night sky — it’s a mirror of the soul.

The first celebration, “Jugoya” (十五夜), is the Mid-Autumn Full Moon, introduced from China over a thousand years ago.
Families gaze upon the bright, perfect moon and give thanks for nature’s abundance — displaying susuki (pampas grass) and offering tsukimi-dango (moon-viewing rice dumplings).

But there is a second moon.
“Jusanya” (十三夜) — the Night of the Thirteenth Moon — is uniquely Japanese.
It falls about a month later, and the moon is slightly waning — imperfect, yet serene.
In Japan, this moon is called “the next most beautiful moon after the Mid-Autumn full moon.”
To see only the full moon and not the thirteenth is called katatsukimi — “one-sided moon viewing” — once thought to bring bad luck.

Jusanya reminds us that beauty doesn’t fade when perfection passes; it deepens.
It’s a quiet celebration of wabi-sabi, gratitude, and harmony with the changing seasons.

✨
In 2025, the Jusanya will fall on November 2nd (Sunday).
Will you join us in watching the gentle moon of Japan — not perfect, but profoundly beautiful?
