Sukeban - Japan’s underground queens of rebellion. In the 1970s, these all-female gangs shattered gender norms with defiant style, strict sisterhood codes, and don’t-mess-with-me attitudes. Long skirts, customized uniforms, and scarred pride told the world they answered to no one.

Fast-forward to today, and their legacy bleeds into street fashion, anime, music, and the global girl gang aesthetic. Sukeban isn’t just a retro movement — it’s a cultural blueprint for fearless femininity.

“Sukeban” refers to delinquent girls - the typical image is of girl gangs in the 70s/80s with their signature long skirts. In addition to the skirts being a part of their identity, it’s said that they were a symbol of rebellion and a rejection of sexualisation with the increasing popularity of miniskirts in the 60s. That is, Sukeban were reclaiming bodily autonomy like the girl bosses they were.

Sukeban protested against society with their alternative fashion, radical sisterhood and were often involved in crimes such including violence, theft and drug use.

Just for fun, I did this little Sukeban photoshoot with - we were aiming for Showa era vibes - how did we go? 😆
