Burping your baby helps release swallowed air during feeding, which can prevent discomfort, spitting up, and fussiness. Here are three common and effective positions to burp your baby:

1. Over the Shoulder:

• Hold your baby against your chest with their chin resting on your shoulder.
• Support their head and back with one hand.
• Gently pat or rub their back with your other hand. The pressure on their tummy against your shoulder helps to release air.

2. Sitting on Your Lap:

• Sit your baby on your lap, facing away from you.
• Lean them slightly forward, supporting their chest and head with one hand (your palm supporting their chest and your fingers supporting their chin/jaw, making sure not to put pressure on their throat).
• Gently pat or rub their back with your free hand.

3. Face Down on Your Lap (Across Your Lap):

• Lay your baby face down across your lap.
• Make sure their head is slightly higher than their body to avoid blood rushing to their head.
• Support their head with one hand.
• Gently pat or rub their back with your other hand.

Tips for Effective Burping:

• Burp during and after feeding: If bottle-feeding, try to burp your baby every 2-3 ounces. If breastfeeding, burp them when they switch breasts or halfway through a long feeding. Always burp them at the end of a feeding.

• Keep them upright: After a feeding, try to keep your baby upright for 10-15 minutes, even if they've burped, to help settle their stomach and prevent reflux.

• Be patient: Some babies burp easily, others take a bit longer. If a burp doesn't come immediately, try changing positions.

• Gentle pats: You don't need to hit your baby hard. Gentle, rhythmic pats or rubs are usually sufficient.

Here are 5 ways you can tell if your baby is getting enough milk — whether you're breastfeeding or bottle-feeding:

1. Enough Wet and Dirty Diapers
Wet diapers: Expect at least 6 wet diapers per day by day 5.

P**p: In the first weeks, 3+ bowel movements a day are common (yellow, seedy for breastfed babies).

Fewer diapers may mean baby isn’t getting enough fluids.

2. Steady Weight Gain
After initial weight loss (normal in the first few days), your baby should start gaining weight by day 5 and return to birth weight by around 10–14 days.

Regular check-ups help track growth.

3. Baby Seems Satisfied After Feeding
Your baby appears relaxed, sleepy, or content after a feed.

If your baby is still fussy, especially after every feeding, they might not be getting enough.

4. You Hear or See Swallowing During Feeding
Look for rhythmic sucking and pauses (this is swallowing).

If you’re breastfeeding, you may hear soft gulping or see their jaw move in a sucking-swallowing pattern.

5. Your Breasts Feel Fuller Before and Softer After Feeding (for breastfeeding moms)
This indicates milk transfer is happening.

You may also feel let-down (a tingling sensation) and see milk leaking or dripping.

What Is Colic in Babies?

Is your baby crying for hours and nothing seems to help?
You’re not alone — and it might be colic.

💡 Colic is when a healthy baby cries:
🔹 For more than **3 hours a day**
🔹 On more than **3 days a week**
🔹 For at least **3 weeks in a row**

That’s a LOT of crying — and it can be overwhelming for any parent. 😓

✨ The good news? Colic is **common** and **temporary**.
It usually starts around 2–3 weeks of age and often improves by 3 to 4 months.

🍼 Common triggers might include:
– Digestive discomfort or gas
– Overstimulation
– A sensitive temperament

💗 Tips to soothe a colicky baby:
✅ Swaddle or gently rock them
✅ Use white noise or soft shushing
✅ Try tummy time or a warm bath
✅ Feed in an upright position and burp often

Remember: **You’re not doing anything wrong.**
Colic isn’t your fault, and it doesn’t mean your baby is unwell.
