January–June: Exports in five categories generally performed well.
In particular, whisky posted strong results, with only January 2025 falling below the previous year's figures. It exceeded the previous year’s figures for five consecutive months, reaching an export value of ¥28.9 billion for the January–June period.

Shochu also maintained steady growth, gaining attention from bartenders as a notable ingredient, and rose by 29% to reach ¥1.7 billion.

Sake also performed steadily, growing by 12% year-on-year for the January–June period. The U.S. ended with a modest 1% increase year-on-year, but in June, its trend differed from whisky (whisky exports to the U.S. appeared strong at +5% year-on-year for January–June, but dropped to -33% in June alone). Sake to the U.S. was up 6% in June.

Meanwhile, China showed particularly strong performance earlier in the year, but in June alone, it fell below the previous year’s level. Nevertheless, sake exports to China grew 30% year-on-year for the January–June period.

How far will cross-border e-commerce grow in China? This is worth watching.

From January to May 2025, exports of Japanese sake increased by 14% compared to the same period last year. While the U.S. showed year-on-year declines in two of the five months, China has been the driving force, recording no negative year-on-year months in 2025 and achieving a cumulative +35% from January to May. In recent years, the U.S. had offset the slowdown in China, but this year, the trend has reversed.

All five categories—sake, whisky, honkaku shochu, wine, and gin—have surpassed last year’s results for the January–April period. The recovery in China is particularly evident in the cases of sake and whisky. Attention is now focused on how U.S. customs clearance figures will shift from May onward.
