Gifu Castle — Where the Wind Carries History

Gifu Shōhōji Daibutsu — Japan’s Hidden Giant

Tucked quietly inside Shōhōji Temple in Gifu City stands one of Japan’s Three Great Buddha statues, yet surprisingly few visitors know about it.
Unlike the bronze giants of Nara and Kamakura, the Gifu Daibutsu (built in 1832) is made from a bamboo framework covered with clay, lacquer, and gold leaf — giving it a serene, almost ethereal glow.
At 13.7 meters tall, it radiates calm strength, a reminder that beauty doesn’t always need to shout; sometimes, it simply shines from within.

A light drizzle in Gujo Hachiman couldn’t wash away our zest! 🌧️
Carps swam lazily in the crystal river, reflections dancing like a live iTunes screensaver 🎶💦
We wandered through the charming streets, admired “too-real-to-be-fake” food replicas,
and rewarded ourselves with a creamy ice cream that wasn’t plastic this time 😄🍦
Rain or shine, Gujo glows in its own way.

Gokayama – Hidden Heritage Village of Japan

Driving through the misty mountains of Toyama Prefecture, we finally reached Gokayama (五箇山) — a secluded village where time seems to have stopped.
Thatched-roof farmhouses built over 250 years ago still stand gracefully, their steep roofs designed to withstand heavy snow. Unlike the more famous Shirakawa-go, Gokayama feels quieter, more authentic — a true glimpse into Japan’s rural past.

Strolling through Ainokura and Suganuma, we could hear the gentle sound of the river, smell the wood smoke from old hearths, and imagine the lives once lived here.
It’s no wonder Gokayama, together with Shirakawa-go, is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — preserving not just architecture, but a way of life.

The Harsh Truth Behind Japan’s Countryside Retirement Dream
Many Japanese dream of retiring to the countryside: buying a charming old farmhouse, living among rice fields, enjoying birdsong in spring and snow in winter. Sounds idyllic, right?

Reality check:
👉 Medical care is scarce—hospitals may be an hour away, turning emergencies into gambles.
👉 Daily life is inconvenient—limited shops, poor public transport.
👉 Houses may be cheap to buy, but renovations swallow millions of yen.

One couple bought a 90-year-old farmhouse for ¥9 million. After just a year, repair and living costs piled on another ¥5 million, and they had to sell it off and retreat back to the city.

The countryside dream often turns into a financial nightmare. In the end, retirement bliss isn’t just about fields and fresh air—it also requires nearby hospitals and convenience stores. 😅

乡下养老梦，现实反击来得很快
日本不少人向往“田园归隐”，买下一栋古民家，改造成理想的养老居所。听起来很诗意：推开门就是稻田，春看花草，夏闻蝉鸣，冬赏白雪。

但现实呢？
👉 医疗资源稀缺：最近的医院要开车几十分钟，紧急情况简直是场豪赌。
👉 生活机能不足：商店、公共设施零散，交通不便。
👉 房子是便宜买的，修缮却是个无底洞，费用动辄数百万日元。

一对夫妇就经历了这样的故事：兴冲冲花了 900万日元买古民家，没想到住了一年，维修和生活成本再加 500万日元，最终只好卖掉房子，重新回到城市。
