“Only in Japan — where even the seagulls get their own torii gate!” ⛩

At the far northern tip of Shimokita Peninsula, the sea cradles a tiny island crowned with a toy-like torii — perhaps the entrance to a shrine for wandering seabirds. We lingered there a moment, before the wind led us onward to greet the proud Kandame horses.

下北半島の最果て、海に抱かれた小島の上に、まるでおもちゃのような小さな鳥居。きっと、海をさまようカモメたちの神社なのかもしれません。風に背中を押され、私たちは寒立馬の待つ岬へと向かいました。

Tsūjun Bridge: A Fountain of Feats and Farmers’ Genius

Hidden among the peaceful rice fields of Yamato, Kumamoto, the Tsūjun Bridge is more than a bridge — it’s a 19th-century water-launching superstar. Built in 1854 by visionary village head Yasunosuke Futa, this stone aqueduct bridge solved a life-threatening dilemma: how to get water across a mountain to thirsty rice fields.

The solution? A gravity-fed siphon system that sprays water upward in a majestic arc — a dramatic show of physics and farming spirit. To this day, the bridge still erupts like a geyser during special water-release events.

What’s more, it’s built entirely from interlocking stones — no cement. Pure Edo-era ingenuity.

We’ve visited this incredible place three times during our various self-driving trips through Japan — and each time, it left us awed all over again.

通潤橋：水を飛ばす、農民の知恵の結晶

熊本県山都町ののどかな田園に立つ通潤橋（つうじゅんきょう）は、ただの橋ではありません。1854年、村役人布田保之助が、干ばつに苦しむ田畑を救うために造った、日本最大級の石造アーチ水路橋です。

その仕組みは驚きのサイフォン原理。橋の中を通った水が、両端の水口から空高く噴き上がる！まるで水のショー。今でも定期的に放水が行われ、観光客を魅了しています。

しかも、橋はすべて石の組み合わせだけで造られ、接着剤は一切なし。江戸の職人技に脱帽です。

私たちはこれまでの日本自驾旅中、三度ここを訪れました。そのたびに、圧巻の技術と風景に心を奪われました。

通润桥：三度造访的“喷水奇桥”

在熊本山都町的田野之间，静静伫立着一座会“喷水”的桥——通润桥。它建于1854年，由地方官员布田保之助设计，目的是为了解决山那边稻田缺水的灌溉问题。

这座桥利用虹吸原理，让水从高处注入桥体，再从两端水口喷射成高空水柱，场面壮观，至今每逢特定日子仍会举行人工放水活动，是游客喜爱的奇景。

更令人惊叹的是，整座桥完全不用水泥，全靠石块咬合搭建，展现了江户时代精湛的水利与建筑技艺。

我们在不同的日本自驾旅中三次造访此地，每一次都为它的美丽与匠心所震撼，永远值得回访。

Wild, Wind-Kissed & Wonderfully Aloof – The Kandachime Horses of Cape Shiriya

On the far northeastern edge of Japan’s main island, where the sea crashes into cliffside meadows, lives a rare breed of horse — the Kandachime (寒立馬), meaning “horse that stands in the cold.”

Thick-coated and short-legged, these sturdy horses aren’t built for elegance or speed — they’re born for endurance. Once workhorses for local farmers, they were released to roam freely when machines replaced them. Now, they wander Cape Shiriya, unfenced, unbothered, as if the wind itself granted them sovereignty.

Surprisingly, Kandachime aren’t afraid of humans. Approach quietly and you may receive a slow blink, a thoughtful stare, or a flick of the tail — as if they’re sizing you up like an interesting but slightly silly visitor.

In winter, they simply stand in snowstorms, unmoving, like meditating monks. No shelter. No fuss. Just calm strength.

So when you stand at the cliff’s edge in Aomori, where earth meets legend, don’t forget to greet these shaggy poets of the North — symbols of survival, solitude, and freedom.

🇨🇳 风中自立的孤影——青森尻屋崎的寒立马

在日本本州岛最东北角的悬崖之上，海风拍岸，草原起伏，这里生活着一种稀有的马——寒立马，意为“站在寒风中的马”。

这种马体型矮壮、披毛厚密，不以俊美见长，却以坚韧著称。它们原本是当地农人的劳力，后来因机械取代劳作，被放养在尻屋崎海角，悠然地在风中漫步，无需围栏，也无人驱赶，仿佛与这片北方的土地早已达成某种协议。

令人意外的是，寒立马并不惧怕人类。你可以靠近它们，它们可能只是静静地看你一眼，或懒懒地甩甩尾巴，仿佛在评估你这个突如其来的访客是否值得注意。

到了冬天，它们常常就那样站在雪中，纹丝不动，如同冥想中的僧侣。没有马厩、没有遮蔽、没有怨言，只有沉默中的力量。

所以如果你站在青森尻屋崎的尽头，看海风翻卷、传说低吟，请记得向这些北方的草原诗人致意——它们是孤独与自由的象征，也是人类不易触及的静谧之美。

🇯🇵 風を纏い、静かに立つ——青森・尻屋崎の寒立馬（かんだちめ）

本州最北東端、荒波が草原の断崖を打ちつける尻屋崎に、「寒立馬（かんだちめ）」と呼ばれる珍しい在来馬が静かに生きています。その名の通り、「寒さの中にじっと立つ馬」です。

短い脚と厚い毛に覆われた彼らは、速さでも美しさでもなく、耐えることに特化した馬たち。かつては農作業の力として使われていましたが、時代の流れとともに放牧され、今では柵もなく、誰に縛られることもなく、岬を自由に歩いています。まるで北風そのものが彼らに自由を与えたかのように。

そして不思議なことに、彼らは人をあまり恐れません。そっと近づけば、のんびりとまばたきしたり、少し首をかしげたり、無関心そうに尻尾を振ったりと、訪問者を観察しているかのようです。

冬になると、吹雪の中でも動じず、ただそこに立ち続けます。馬小屋も、屋根も、文句もなし。ただ、静かな強さだけがそこにあります。

もしあなたが青森の岬の果てに立つとき、大地と神話が交わるその場所で、この北国の詩人たちにそっと心を向けてみてください。彼らは生きること、耐えること、そして自由であることの象徴です。

⛩️The Shrine That Bites Fate Softly: Amagamine Ochobo Inari

📍Hidden at the end of a flood tunnel – Kano, Gifu

Long forgotten, half believed, and entirely magical—this lonely torii gate deep within a concrete flood tunnel isn’t marked on tourist maps. But locals whisper its name: 甘噛稲荷神社 (Amagamine Ochobo Inari)—The Soft-Biting Fox Shrine.

Legend says a city fox spirit named Ochobo made her home here after escaping the chaos of Kyoto’s Inari hills. Instead of guarding rice, she guarded small misfortunes—biting fate lightly to delay the worst of it. A worker trapped during a sudden flood once claimed the fox whispered to him in the dark:

“If you leave me tofu and to***co, I’ll bite the flood before it bites you.”

In return, he placed a torii gate there—deep, hidden, and private. Since then, nobody knows if the shrine is sacred, or just a city myth wrapped in rust and moss.

But when you enter, quietly, with damp footsteps and a respectful offering—sometimes you feel it: a nibble on your luck.

咬住厄运的狐狸神社：甘噛稲荷神社

📍岐阜·加纳区，暴雨排水道尽头

这不是观光地图上的景点，而是都市传说中的神秘角落——在混凝土隧道的尽头，一座孤独的鸟居静静矗立。当地人称它为甘噛稲荷神社，意思是“轻轻咬住”的稻荷狐狸神社。

传说里，狐狸神灵「おちょぼ」离开了京都的山林，悄悄定居于城市的洪水道中。她不守护五谷丰登，而是轻轻咬住命运中的小灾难——让它迟一点来，不那么猛。

一位在施工中被困的工人声称，当他在黑暗中以为将被洪水吞噬时，听到了狐狸的低语：

“若你供我豆腐与烟草，我就先咬住洪水。”

他逃过一劫，便在尽头立下鸟居。从此，这个地方成了传说，也成了某些人祈愿的秘密角落。

带上一点心意，不说话，慢慢走进——你或许会感觉，有什么轻轻咬了你的厄运。

運命を噛む狐の神社：甘噛稲荷神社

📍岐阜県加納地区、洪水トンネルの果てに

この神社は、地図に載っていない。観光客も知らない。だけど、地元の人々はこう呼ぶ——甘噛稲荷神社（あまがみいなりじんじゃ）。

昔、京都の稲荷山から都会に逃げた狐の霊「おちょぼ」は、このコンクリートの地下世界に棲みついた。彼女は米ではなく、ちいさな不運を守る。災いが来る前に、そっと噛んで遅らせるのだ。

ある日、大雨で作業員がトンネルに閉じ込められた。死を覚悟した時、狐がささやいたという：

「豆腐と煙草を供えれば、あなたの代わりに水を噛んでやる。」

彼は助かり、感謝の鳥居をそこに建てた。それ以来、この場所は伝説となり、迷信となり、静かな祈りの場になった。

静かに歩き、ささやかなお供えを捧げよう。もしかすると、あなたの運命を、誰かがそっと噛んでくれるかもしれない。

🏯✨ Usa Castle — The Pint-Sized Samurai Dream You Didn’t Know You Needed

宇佐城 · Usa City, Ōita Prefecture, Kyushu

In a town best known for gods and shrines, Usa Castle sits quietly — small, scenic, and slightly smug.

Once a hilltop fortress in the chaotic Sengoku period, its current form is a charming modern reconstruction, perched like a samurai’s modest mountain retreat.

Why it’s worth the stop:
• 🌸 Spectacular panoramic views over rice fields, forests, and shrines.
• 🚶‍♀️ A quick and friendly hike — just enough for a samurai stretch, not a samurai sweat.
• 📸 Excellent photo angles, especially during cherry blossom or autumn leaf season.
• 😌 A castle that doesn’t try to impress with size — just with serenity and style.

Welcome to USA — Where the Gods Arrived Before the Presidents

Usa City · Usa Jingu Shrine · Ōita Prefecture, Kyushu

In the gentle hills of northern Kyushu, you’ll find a place that makes travelers smile — and then fall silent in awe.
This is Usa (宇佐), a city with a famous name and a far more ancient soul.

Yes, the road signs really do say:

“Welcome to USA.”

But here, “USA” means something deeper.

It’s home to Usa Jingu Shrine, one of Japan’s most important Shinto sites — the head shrine of Hachiman, the god of war, divine protector of the Japanese people, and spiritual guardian of the samurai.

Founded in the 8th century, Usa Shrine is older than the country most associate with the letters “U.S.A.” It is not only sacred — it is breathtaking.
• The shrine’s triple hall structure (unusual in Shinto architecture) nestles among towering camphor trees, misty ponds, and vermilion bridges.
• Pilgrims once traveled here from Kyoto to receive blessings before battle or important decisions.
• Usa Shrine became the blueprint for over 40,000 Hachiman shrines across Japan — making it the spiritual “capital” of warrior worship.

Yet visitors also love Usa for its humor:
Local signs proudly read “USA Police” or “USA Post Office.”

❖ Where the Owl Watches — Kotan Kor Kamuy, the Spirit of the Ainu Terrace ❖

Beneath the sweeping eaves of Hokkaido’s wind-whittled terraces,
an ancient presence watches in silence —
not with menace, but with memory.
It is the owl, Kotan kor Kamuy,
the god who does not forget,
who guards the village even as time slips away.

In Ainu mythology, the owl (kotan kor kamuy) is the guardian deity of the village — literally, “the god who watches over the kotan (settlement).” Revered with solemnity, the owl is a protector, a judge, a messenger, and a bringer of warnings and blessings.
• It guards homes from misfortune, ensuring spiritual balance.
• As a divine envoy, the owl connects humans with higher beings.
• Carvings of owls are placed at entrances to ward off harm.
• In legends, the owl resolves divine disputes and alerts humans to danger.

The Blakiston’s fish owl, with its booming nocturnal call, is especially sacred. Its presence is a sign of peace, protection, and ancestral memory.

在北海道风吹草低的木屋台地下，
猫头鹰静静地伫立，不是侵扰者，
而是守望者——
阿伊努的守村神 kotan kor kamuy。
