Located in a quiet area of Kyoto tucked down small side streets and local life near Kiyomizu-dera, 𝗞𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗶 𝗞𝗮𝗻𝗷𝗶𝗿𝗼’𝘀 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 has remained here since the 1930s when the artist and potter first built it as his home and studio.

Kawai Kanjirō (河井寛次郎 1890-1966), a renowned potter, poet, and key figure of the Mingei Folk Craft movement, has influenced many – both in Japan and abroad – with his works and philosophy on life.

Not just a museum, Kawai Kanjirō’s House feels like a living, breathing embodiment of his creative spirit. It presents the beauty in the every day as Kawai saw the world around him, left exactly as it was when Kanjiro lived in it with his children and grandchildren.

Visitors to the house can wander freely around the two-floor house, outdoor areas of garden and kiln, experiencing the place as it once was used. The beautifully modest garden is lined with stone pathways and decorated with ceramic sculptures in addition to the crafts he collected from artists in Japan and overseas.

One of the most important places to visit in Kyoto because of its combination of architecture, design, art, pottery and handcraft combined, Kawai Kanjirō’s House inspires in more ways than one.

Architects Antón García-Abril () and Débora Mesa have created their own vernacular in architecture, one that belies conformity and trends. Through 𝗘𝗻𝘀𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼, their architectural unit based in Spain and the US, balances research and practice, exploring typologies, technologies and methodologies to identify a diverse landscape of notions and issues within the built environment. They challenge the typified prefabrication of a house or the preemptive chronologies in construction.

𝗢𝗸𝗮𝘆𝗮𝗺𝗮, 𝗝𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗻: Japan’s countryside areas are not only declining and ageing in population but are becoming more susceptible to increasing natural disasters. Such was the case in Summer 2018 when the small town of Mabi town just north of Kurashiki City in Japan’s Okayama prefecture was severely damaged by the torrential rains.

Six years later, Japanese architectural firm Kengo Kuma & Associates has completed a new community facility and emergency storage warehouse in Mabi town. The structure’s exterior and interior clad in bamboo sourced directly from the north of the town, renowned for its bamboo production.

Game of edible chess, anyone? ♟️

Pastry 𝚊𝚛𝚝𝚒𝚜𝚝 extraordinaire, 𝙀𝙡𝙡𝙚 𝘼𝙯𝙝𝙙𝙖𝙧𝙞 () can apply her innovative ideas to anything. Enter her world of colour, shape and texture, where anything 𝔬𝔲𝔱-𝔬𝔣-𝔱𝔥𝔦𝔰-𝔲𝔫𝔦𝔳𝔢𝔯𝔰𝔢 goes.

From her formative years in London to New York and back, her years in the fashion industry and brand consulting saw her create campaigns, pop-ups, brand launches and parties, and her own line The Fan became a and model favourite, spotted at every fashion week.

All those experiences have led her to the patisserie world, where the artist has crafted her own cakes made with explosive colour and form that reflect her unbound energy, style and open perspective. Why be someone else when you can be 𝔂𝓸𝓾𝓻𝓼𝓮𝓵𝓯.

From starting as a pastry intern at Stockholm’s renowned , to now working solely on private commissions for artists such as Carsten Höller, the city’s best galleries (Millesgården Museum, Loyal Gallery) and custom brand projects (such as ), Elle’s work has taken full flight. Champ Editor speaks to the pastry artist about her Persian culture, creative burnout and the courage to try anything your heart desires.
