Spending about two months in Vienna, Austria was more than just a visit—it was an experience that left a lasting mark on me. From the moment I arrived, I was struck by the city’s perfect blend of imperial history and modern elegance. Vienna is not just beautiful, it has a soul that speaks through its architecture, music, and way of life.

STORY TIME:
I Lost My Wallet in Japan (Twice)

Yes, I’ve lost my wallet in Japan—not just once, but twice. Let me share my unexpectedly “awesome” experiences.

First Time:
Every Saturday afternoon, I would bike to a nearby grocery store with just my phone, wallet, and eco-bag. One weekend, I absentmindedly left my wallet in the bicycle basket and only noticed it was missing the next day. Immediately I reported to the police, and luckily, a passerby had found it and took it to the police station. Two days later, I got a call from the police—thanks to the calling card inside my wallet. Everything was returned, down to the last cent.

Second Time:
During sakura season, my coworker and I had lunch outside at a bench near the office. In a rush to finish and clean up, I unknowingly left my wallet behind. Hours later, around 4:30 p.m., a restaurant staff near the bench called my workplace. A kind stranger had found my wallet and handed it to the restaurant staff. Again, thanks to my calling card, they were able to reach me. I picked it up easily from the building’s lost and found section.

Why I Love Japan:
Japanese people are incredibly honest. Even strangers avoid opening lost items, instead handing them over to the police or proper authorities. It’s one of the many reasons I feel safe living in Japan.

Lesson Learned:
I now always use a backpack or sling bag when going out. Carrying things by hand is a weakness I’ve finally learned to fix.

My first experience in Japan was in 2005, and it began in the historic city of Kyoto. I was fortunate to live near one of the city’s most iconic landmarks — the five-story pagoda of Tō-ji Temple. It quickly became a familiar sight in my daily life.

Living in Kyoto felt like stepping into a living museum. The city is famous for its well-preserved temples, shrines, and traditional wooden houses, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. From the golden splendor of Kinkaku-ji to the thousands of red torii gates at Fushimi Inari Shrine, Kyoto is a place where history and modern life coexist beautifully.

When was your first Japan experience?

In Japan bicycles represented a convenient, cheap, and efficient transport solution. Cars are generally considerate to bicycles, it is fantastic country for cycle touring. Everyday going to work I use this little bicycle and saved money for transportation. Imagine for 1year without paying any cent for transportation.
