Hunger cues to know 💗

Hungry babies show signs of hunger before they begin to cry. Watch your baby and respond to the early signs of hunger, such as lip smacking, putting their fist in their mouth, or rooting toward your breast. Once a baby is crying, it can be harder to latch!

Every year during the month of August, we celebrate breastfeeding and discuss ways to support breastfeeding families. This year’s theme is “Protect Breastfeeding: a Shared Responsibility.”

Hello Yokosuka area families! It’s time for an update on your local La Leche League. Our Leader Lauren Ricks has just PCSed, which means we do not currently have any in-person LLL support at this time. However, our Leader Nicolle Salvador Heisserer (that’s me!) is still monitoring the page and can still help with breastfeeding questions over Facebook messenger or video calls. I also help run La Leche League of Guam LLL now, and you are welcome to join our monthly meetings held via Zoom (with only an hour time difference from Japan!)

As for in-person support, there are still many options in the area:

-LLL Tokyo has an English-speaking group
-Becca Kofonov is reviving The Lactation Connection Yokosuka group and plans to hold peer support meetings in the future
-USNH Yokosuka has a Lactation Consultant available
-Navy Marine Corps Relief Society has a visiting nurse

Breastfeeding is natural, but by no means easy. Please don’t hesitate to reach out for help, there is support available to you 🤎
