A SUSPECT in the killing of community health nurse Sophie Lesintiyio has been arrested by detectives in Maralal, ending a two-day manhunt.

Francis Ekale Ekaitan, also known as "Nunu", was arrested by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) this evening as he was attempting to leave Maralal town, according to DCI.

Ekaitan, a Maralal-based mechanic from the Loikas area, is the prime suspect in the death of the nurse, whose body was found at her house within the Naimaral Dispensary compound in Samburu North yesterday morning.

Police said the suspect fled after the incident but was tracked down and arrested following an intensive manhunt by detectives.

The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in the case, which has sparked outrage and grief across the local community.

FROM BABY TO RIVAL 🇦🇷🤝🇪🇸⚽

In 2007, a young Lionel Messi took part in a UNICEF charity photoshoot at Barcelona. A family won a raffle, and their five-month-old baby, Lamine Yamal, was chosen for the photos.

Today, that baby has become one of the world's biggest football stars.

This Sunday, Messi's Argentina and Yamal's Spain are expected to face each other in the World Cup final in New York, USA. A photo taken 19 years ago has turned into one of football's most remarkable stories.

SEVEN MARALAL DIOCESE PRIESTS SUSPENDED BY BISHOP
Maralal, Samburu County – The Catholic Diocese of Maralal has suspended seven priests following a directive issued by Bishop Hieronymus Emusugut Joya and announced at Maralal Parish.

The suspended priests are:
1. Rev. Fr. Paul Maina
2. Rev. Fr. Peter Musau
3. Rev. Fr. Stephen Lekasuyan
4. Rev. Fr. Peter Nderitu
5. Rev. Fr. Christopher Letikirich
6. Rev. Fr. John Dida
7. Rev. Fr. Jonathan Namoni

According to the bishop's pastoral letter, the suspensions are linked to allegations involving abuse of ecclesiastical authority, negligence in administration, and improper management of Church resources. The bishop also emphasized stricter standards of clergy conduct, including responsible stewardship of Church property and finances, sobriety while conducting liturgical services, faithful performance of pastoral duties, and regular attendance in carrying out evangelization (preaching the Gospel). The suspensions took effect on July 10, 2026.

Three Herders Killed in Loosuk Raid as Four Suspected Attackers Die

Three Samburu herders were killed today after they were reportedly attacked by armed raiders believed to be from the Pokot community in Loosuk, Samburu County.

BARAGOI POLICE RECRUITMENT SCAM SUSPECT ARRAIGNED IN COURT

A man accused of masterminding a fake Kenya Police recruitment scam that allegedly conned residents of Baragoi out of millions of shillings has been arraigned in court following his arrest by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The suspect is alleged to have deceived more than 20 job seekers from Baragoi and surrounding areas late last year by falsely promising to secure them positions in the Kenya Police Service. Each victim reportedly paid over KSh 300,000, with the total amount lost exceeding KSh 8.6 million.

According to investigators, the victims reported the matter at Baragoi Police Station, prompting detectives from DCI Samburu North to launch investigations. The suspect allegedly went into hiding and ignored several police summons before detectives tracked him down and arrested him at a hideout in Nairobi.

During the operation, investigators also recovered two motor vehicles believed to have been purchased using proceeds from the alleged scam. The vehicles have since been impounded as exhibits as investigations continue.

The suspect was presented before the Maralal Law Courts, where detectives were granted additional time to complete investigations. He is expected to appear in court again as the case proceeds.

The incident serves as a reminder to job seekers to remain vigilant and avoid paying money to individuals claiming they can influence recruitment into government agencies. Kenyan authorities have repeatedly emphasized that recruitment into the National Police Service and other government institutions is conducted transparently and does not require payment or the use of brokers.

Charda Conflict Update

The death toll from the Charda conflict, which ended yesterday evening, has risen to 12.

Most of the cattle that had been stolen during the raid have not been recovered yet. Two people sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at Maralal Referral Hospital. One patient remains in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while the other is receiving treatment in the operating theatre.

Our sincere condolences go to the families who lost their loved ones. We also wish the injured a swift recovery and hope that lasting peace and security will return to the area.
