RAHAB A pr******te
The two spies sent by Joshua from Sh*ttim came into her house and lodged there (Joshua 2:1 ). She refused to betray them to the king of Jericho, and when he demanded them, she hid them on the roof of her house with stalks of flax that she had laid in order to dry. She pretended that they had escaped before the shutting of the gate, and threw their pursuers off their track. She then told the spies of the fear that the coming of the Israelites had caused in the minds of the Canaanites - "Our hearts did melt ... for Yahweh your God, he is God in heaven above, and on earth beneath" - and asked that the men promise to spare her father, mother, brothers and sisters, and all that they had. They promised her to spare them provided they would remain in her house and provided she would keep their business secret. Thereupon she let them down by a cord through the window, her house being built upon the town wall, and gave them directions to make good their escape
KEY LESSONS FROM RAHAB'S LIFE
1. Your Past Does Not Limit Your Destiny
Rahab is explicitly introduced in the text as a pr******te living in a pagan society. Yet, her past did not disqualify her from being used in a profound way. Her story shows that dynamic change and purpose are available to anyone, regardless of background or prior reputation.
2. Faith Demands Action
In the New Testament, both the Book of Hebrews and James highlight Rahab’s legacy. James 2:25 explicitly notes that her faith was demonstrated by what she did—protecting the messengers and sending them out safely. Recognizing truth is only the first step; acting on it is what transforms circumstances.
3. Real Faith Moves Past Fear
Every other citizen in Jericho was paralyzed by fear upon hearing about the Red Sea crossing and Israel's victories (Joshua 2:9–11). While the rest of the city hid behind fortified walls, Rahab turned her awe into active trust in God. She chose covenant over culture.
4. Faith Protects More Than Just Yourself
When negotiating with the spies, Rahab’s request wasn't self-centered: "Save the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them." Her decisive choice provided a safe haven for her entire extended family during a time of crisis.
5. Grace Rewrites Your Legacy
Rahab didn't just survive the fall of Jericho—she was fully integrated into the community. According to the Gospel of Matthew (Matthew 1:5), Rahab became the mother of Boaz, making her an ancestor of King David and directly part of the lineage of Jesus Christ.
