The country's leader recently visited the facility to assess progress and gain insight into the operational conditions, underscoring a renewed emphasis on productivity, self-sufficiency, and reform. This development prompts a crucial inquiry: Can correctional facilities evolve beyond punitive measures to become hubs for skill development, agricultural production, and national sustenance?

⚠️ SECURITY ALERT: What’s fueling the crime surge in Busia? ⚠️

Residents across Busia County, especially in Teso and Malaba, are raising serious alarms over a spike in violent attacks and insecurity. From organized gangs to border-specific challenges, this is what’s happening and why:
• Rise of Youth Gangs: Groups like the "Tokyo Mafias" and other youth networks are increasingly active, linked to muggings and violent robberies.
• Targeting of Security Guards: In recent months, thugs armed with crude weapons have specifically targeted night guards, leading to several deaths and injuries in Malaba Sub-County.
• Porous Border Challenges: The lack of scanners and sniffer dogs at the border continues to hinder the war against smuggling and the illicit trade of goods.
• Alleged Security Laxity: Local leaders have called for the transfer of police officers who have overstayed, alleging that some may be colluding with criminals or failing to conduct adequate night patrols.

• The "Disco Matanga" Menace: Night funeral parties remain a major trigger for late-night violence, drug abuse, and sexual exploitation.

What’s being done?
• New Security Initiatives: A three-year program was recently launched to improve police-community relations and use sports to engage youth in peacebuilding.

• Interior Ministry Intervention: Interior CS Kithure Kindiki recently toured the county to strategize on curbing the drug trade and strengthening intelligence gathering.

• Stricter Penalties: The county has warned that those caught breaking local security laws could face immediate on-the-spot fines.

William Tate, a son of a former MP, is serving a life sentence at Kamiti Prison for robbing his parents of KSh 157,000.

Robbery with violence is a capital offence, and once a person is charged in court, even if the complainant wishes to forgive them, the case cannot simply be withdrawn because it is prosecuted by the state.

Many people assume that robbery with violence only involves the use of a gun. However, stealing from someone while armed with any weapon,such as a knife, stone, or even a sharp object like a pen can qualify as robbery with violence.

The sentence for robbery with violence is usually severe, with most offenders receiving between 20 years and life imprisonment.

William Tate is the adopted son of former nominated MP and former Assistant Minister Betty Tate.

The court heard that the accused committed the offence jointly with others who were not before the court, while armed with a revolver and a knife.

According to the prosecution, the accused went to his parents’ home accompanied by two other men and ordered Mr. Tate to hand over money. They then tied him up with ropes, robbed him, and escaped.

In mitigation, William pleaded for leniency, stating that he was remorseful and wished to reconcile with his family.

However, the magistrate noted that the only sentence provided by law for the capital offence is the death penalty.
