Mount Everest is the world’s tallest mountain measured from sea level, at 29,500 feet (8,848.86 meters). But the real giant is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. From its base on the ocean floor to its summit, it measures 34,000 feet (10,210 meters), dwarfing Mount Everest by about 4,400 feet (1,400 meters). Only a portion of Mauna Kea rises above water, reaching 14,000 feet (4,207 meters) above sea level. Mount Everest is still the tallest mountain on Earth, but Mauna Kea is the real giant when you consider its total height: a giant hidden in the Pacific Ocean.
