Nandi politics is changing day by day, and the political landscape ahead of 2027 remains one of the most unpredictable in Kenya.
President once stated clearly that wananchi will be given the freedom to choose their own leaders without interference or imposed candidates. According to the President, democracy must prevail and the voice of the people must be respected.
However, recent remarks by suggesting that “if people fail to elect the right leaders, others will come and choose for them” have sparked massive reactions across Nandi County and beyond.
The statement has attracted criticism from political leaders, church leaders, opinion leaders, and aspirants from different camps. Many believe such utterances undermine democracy and the constitutional right of citizens to freely elect leaders of their choice.
Former Nandi Governor openly criticized the remarks, saying it was wrong for anyone outside the electorate to dictate leadership choices to the people of Nandi.
As things stand today, the people of Nandi are not ready to vote blindly because of projects, endorsements, sponsorships, or political pressure. The mood on the ground is changing rapidly.
At the same time, leaders who have held office for decades without transforming the lives of the people are also facing rejection from voters. The question many residents are asking is simple: why elect someone who has been in leadership for years yet failed to deliver meaningful development?
The Nandi gubernatorial race remains wide open and highly unpredictable. No candidate can currently claim full control of the ground.
There is also growing resistance against political dynasties, where one family seeks to dominate key county positions for years. Many residents argue that one family cannot control the county leadership indefinitely. If one brother wants to be Governor while another seeks to become Senator, wananchi are asking: who will oversight who?
The political conversation in Nandi is now centered on accountability, performance, fresh leadership, and equal opportunity for all communities and leaders.
Nandi politics has always shocked many observers. In 2013, few believed former Governor could win, but he emerged victorious.
In 2017, political heavyweights including , former minister , and incumbent Governor Cleophas Lagat were all defeated by a relatively less established politician, from Aldai, proving once again that Nandi voters make independent decisions.
In 2022, the gubernatorial race was equally intense, featuring Governor Stephen Sang, Allan Kosgei renowned lawyer , Cleophas Lagat, and several other influential leaders. The competition once again demonstrated how divided and dynamic Nandi politics remains.
One thing is certain: in Nandi County, political power cannot be assumed, inherited, or imposed. The people will decide.
