Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has set a new internet speed record, reaching a jaw-dropping 402 terabits per second (Tbps) using standard, commercially available optical fiber.
By combining six types of doped-fiber amplifiers with both discrete and distributed Raman amplification, researchers were able to tap into an ultra-wide 37.6 terahertz optical bandwidth. That’s over 1,000 times faster than most home internet setups. The team unveiled the achievement at the 47th International Conference on Optical Fiber Communications in San Diego—pushing the limits of what’s possible in data transmission.
