Betty Bayo’s Mother Raises New Allegations Over Daughter’s Death

NAIROBI — Fresh controversy has emerged after the mother of the late Betty Bayo, speaking from the United States in a virtual interview, made several allegations regarding the circumstances of her daughter’s death and her relationship with her husband, Tash.

She disputed earlier reports that Betty died of leukemia, alleging instead that she may have suffered fatal head injuries from assault. She also claimed the couple had separated following financial disputes and alleged domestic violence.

The mother questioned how Tash reportedly returned to Kenya so quickly after the death and accused him of withholding key documents, including Betty’s death certificate. She also raised concerns about the children’s safety, saying the family’s custody agreement was not honored.

Additionally, she alleged inappropriate behavior by Tash after the burial and called for a postmortem to establish the true cause of death.

Rongo University has granted embattled student Chelang’at Mercy a lifeline to complete her studies following last week’s graduation day drama but the window comes with one firm condition that she must clear her outstanding fee arrears amounting to KSh 79,750.

Mercy’s family visited the institution on Wednesday to verify her academic standing and seek clarity on what is required for her to finish her programme.

The university confirmed that Mercy is a legitimate student under the School of Information Science and Technology.

According to records from Rongo University, Mercy successfully sat for all her examinations in her first year. However, in her second year, she did not sit for any exams in both semesters.

She resumed her progress in third year, completing all exams and passing. In fourth year, she sat for her Semester 1 exams but did not sit for Semester 2.

Altogether, she missed exams amounting to one and a half academic years, a gap largely linked to unresolved financial challenges.

If the fee arrears are cleared, Mercy will do Exams in 3 phases; 8 units on January, another 8 in May, and the final 8 in August.

If she successfully completes all these papers, she will qualify to graduate in December 2026.

Mercy’s family expressed appreciation for the university’s decision but acknowledged that raising the required amount remains a challenge.

They appealed to well-wishers and members of the public for assistance to help Mercy resume her studies.
