Fishing remains a critical economic activity for Lamu County and other Counties of the Coast and Nyanza Regions. The Kenya Kwanza Administration has invested substantial amount of resources to the revitalization of the fishing and other blue economy value chains to improve the welfare of fisherfolk and other role players.
Part of that investment includes the construction of fish ports and landing sites to spur value addition and increase earnings for the fisherfolk. We are in the final stages of acquiring modern boats to enable deep sea fishing that is more profitable.
The Government is investing 307 million shillings for the Last Mile Connectivity Programme in Lamu County. 153 million shillings will be spent on electricity connection to new households in Lamu East Constituency.
In the nationwide Modern Market Infrastructure Development Programme, we are constructing fresh produce and fish markets in LamuCounty, including markets in Kizingitini and Hindi whose construction is already underway and a proposed market in Mpeketoni.
We appreciate the diligence and commitment of our security agencies, elected leaders, religious and community leaders and members of the public to secure Lamu County from threats of terrorism and other forms of organised crime.
The upgrading of the 30 kilometres Lamu-Mtangawanga-Kizingitini road to bitumen standards will also begin in thecomingweeks. This will be the first major bitumen-standard road in Lamu East.
