Kenya’s opposition leader Kalonzo Musyoka accused President William Ruto’s administration of pushing the country away from constitutional governance, as he called for a broader and more unified opposition to challenge the government.

Speaking after chairing a joint meeting of the Azimio Council and National Executive Committee, Mr. Musyoka said the opposition was working to restore the rule of law, constitutional protections and accountable government.

He also condemned what he described as the harassment and intimidation of Burundian nationals in Kenya, arguing that the treatment of citizens of a fellow East African Community member conflicted with Kenya’s obligations as a regional neighbour.

Mr. Musyoka further alleged that the Ruto administration was planning to deploy “goons” to disrupt the Linda Mwananchi movement’s activities on Sunday. He did not provide evidence for the allegation.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Odinga has confirmed that he is currently in the United Kingdom for a routine medical check-up following advice from his doctors and party leadership.

In a statement on Thursday, September 10, Oburu said the trip would also give him time to rest and rejuvenate as he undergoes a comprehensive evaluation of his health.

“I am currently in the United Kingdom (UK) to undergo a thorough, routine medical checkup. This visit follows the direct advice of both my doctors and the party leadership to ensure a comprehensive evaluation of my health, while allowing me a dedicated period of rest and rejuvenation,” he wrote.

President William Ruto has opened a Sh470 million main chamber at the Bomet County Assembly, describing the project as an investment in transparency, public scrutiny and more efficient governance.

The ultra-modern facility is equipped with digital systems that Ruto said would help reduce waste and strengthen public oversight of county affairs.

In a post on his official page, the president said the project would also contribute to development in Bomet County.

The investment, however, comes amid broader scrutiny of public spending and whether costly government infrastructure translates into measurable improvements in services and accountability.

The administration of President Donald Trump has backed Kenya’s new policy requiring foreign companies to process minerals locally rather than exporting them in raw form, signaling support for Nairobi’s efforts to increase the value of its mineral resources at home.

Frank Garcia, the U.S. assistant secretary of state for African affairs, said Wednesday, Sept. 9, that American companies were prepared to work with Kenya on local mineral processing and job creation.

“American companies are not here to extract and ship. That is not partnership, that is extraction,” Garcia said at the American Chamber of Commerce Business Summit in Nairobi.

His comments came as President William Ruto’s administration presses ahead with plans to expand local processing of Kenya’s mineral resources, including soda ash produced from Lake Magadi in Kajiado County.
