KENYA AND UNITED STATES SIGN LANDMARK HEALTH COOPERATION FRAMEWORK

Kenya has entered a new era of healthcare transformation following the signing of a historic Health Cooperation Framework with the Government of the United States. The agreement marks a major step toward the full realisation of universal health coverage (UHC) in the country.

The Framework places strong emphasis on strengthening key pillars of Kenya’s health system, including the supply of modern medical equipment to public hospitals, efficient delivery of essential health commodities, upskilling of the health workforce, and the expansion of health insurance to protect every Kenyan.

Under the deal, the United States will invest USD 1.6 billion in Kenya over the next five years. For the first time, these resources will be channelled directly through government institutions, eliminating third-party intermediaries in order to enhance transparency, impact, and accountability.

Kenya has hailed the move as a vote of confidence in the country’s ongoing health reforms. The government expressed appreciation to the United States—under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump—for selecting Kenya as the first country to sign such a cooperation framework.

The partnership builds on more than 25 years of health collaboration between Kenya and the United States, during which America has invested over USD 7 billion in Kenya’s health sector.

The signing ceremony took place in Washington, D.C., where U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi formally sealed the Kenya–US Health Cooperation Framework.

TANA RIVER — Kuza Jamii Phase II was officially launched at Ovo Primary School today, marking a major step in strengthening financial inclusion for vulnerable families in Tana River County.

A highlight was the testimony of Nuru Hagalido Hamisi, a Phase I beneficiary, who said the program had significantly improved her family’s economic stability.

A total of 35 VSLAs received grants amounting to over KSh 10 million, benefiting 928 participants.

The event brought together partners including CHASP Advisory, Village Enterprise, Echo Network Africa, UK International Development, Smart Region Consultants, GENCAD, national government officials, and county leadership.

PASTORALIST COMMUNITY LEADERS URGE PRESIDENT RUTO TO DECLARE DROUGHT A NATIONAL DISASTER

Pastoralist community leaders from across northern Kenya, including Tana River, have urged President William Ruto to declare the worsening drought a national disaster as conditions continue to deteriorate following the failure of the short rains.

Speaking to the media, the leaders warned that the drought has reached alarming levels, with hundreds of livestock already dead and water sources rapidly drying up. They noted that pastoralist families—who rely heavily on their animals—are facing devastating losses.

The leaders also raised concerns that vulnerable women and children are the most affected, with many households lacking enough food, clean water, and essential services.

They appealed for an urgent and coordinated humanitarian response to stop the situation from escalating into a full-blown emergency.

Communities across Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo, Marsabit, and Tana River continue to struggle under worsening conditions, and the leaders expressed hope that the government will move swiftly to cushion affected families from further suffering.

In addition, the government plans to operationalise 24 new sub-counties, 88 divisions, 318 locations, 675 sub-locations, and construct 900 police stations to enhance security across the country.

Nairobi, 30th November 2025 – The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested three Ministry of Labour officials at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for allegedly extorting agents facilitating migrant workers traveling to the Middle East.

According to the EACC, the officials routinely demanded bribes of Kes500 per migrant worker. Surveillance confirmed the practice, leading to an operation on 30th November involving an agent with 78 migrant workers. The officers allegedly demanded and received Kes34,000 before the workers were cleared to travel.

The arrested officials are Benson Ouma Okello, Esther Njoki Gakuru, and Denis Marias. They were taken to the Integrity Centre for processing and will be released on cash bail of Kes50,000 each, pending further investigations.

The Commission emphasized its commitment to eliminating bribery at service delivery points, restoring public trust, and ensuring efficient access to services for all citizens.
