SENATOR MUNGATANA BLAMES TANA RIVER WATER CRISIS ON COUNTY GOVERNMENT MISMANAGEMENT
June 4, 2025

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has blamed the county government for the ongoing water crisis, citing mismanagement and misuse of public funds. He said despite Tana River receiving Ksh 8 billion from the National Government last year, little was invested in water infrastructure.

Speaking on Breakfast 47, Mungatana accused the county of underfunding TAWASCO, forcing residents to rely on a colonial-era water plant. He added that the World Bank withheld funding due to unmet requirements by both the county and TAWASCO, including poor financial records and staffing issues.

β€œThere’s hardly a flagship project residents can be proud of,” he said, also criticizing the state of health facilities, claiming Hola Referral Hospital routinely turns away patients.

His remarks come weeks after Governor Dhadho Godhana skipped a Senate accountability meeting, which lawmakers termed a deliberate attempt to avoid scrutiny.

PRESIDENT HOSTS COASTAL LEADERS AMID TANA RIVER LAND DISPUTE

At State House, Nairobi, President Ruto hosted some leaders from the Coastal counties of Mombasa, Tana River, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale, and Taita Taveta to discuss strategic interventions aimed at uplifting the region’s economy through agriculture, the blue economy, and the maritime sector.

The government also reiterated its commitment to addressing historical land injustices by eradicating the squatter problem and fast-tracking the issuance of title deeds to residents.

The meeting took place at a time when a section of Tana River leaders publicly condemned Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen and NIS Director Noordin Haji over a controversial Gazette Notice that declares parts of Tana River a "Protected Area." The leaders raised alarm over potential displacement without public participation or proper legal procedures.

The leaders demanded immediate revocation of the notice, threatening court action and mass protests if ignored.

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana has intensified pressure on the national government over what he terms as unlawful land acquisition in Tana River and Garissa counties for the construction of a new National Intelligence Service (NIS) campus.

The senator raised the issue at the Senate plenary, calling for a formal statement from the Committee on National Security, Defence, and Foreign Relations. His concerns centred around Gazette Notice No. 6256, published May 16, 2025, which announced the government’s intent to acquire land for the Masalani NIS Campus.

Residents in the affected areas, Mungatana said, have raised serious concerns about the process. They claim the acquisition was carried out without public consultation or any compensation plans. These are both constitutionally mandated steps before such action can be taken.

β€œThe land was expropriated without the required public participation or compensation,” Mungatana told the Senate.

He also pointed out a glaring omission in the official notice. It lacks specific geographical coordinates for the land being taken. This, he argued, undermines transparency and threatens the legal protections afforded to community-owned land, which is held in trust by county governments.

Mungatana urged the committee to investigate several key questions. Why this particular land was chosen. Why the Gazette Notice failed to include clear location details. Whether local communities were consulted before the decision was made public.

He stressed that transparency and accountability are not optional when state action affects citizens’ rights, especially regarding land. This remains a sensitive issue in many parts of Kenya.

The senator also highlighted the lack of compensation for those impacted. β€œWhy has no compensation been paid to those affected?” he asked. He reiterated the need for the national government to act fairly and by the law.

His intervention reflects growing scrutiny over how land acquisitions are handled, particularly in regions where ownership is communal and legal protections must be strictly observed. The call for clarity comes as affected residents await both explanation and redress.

STRONG WINDS CAUSE POWER OUTAGE IN SOME PARTS OF MOMBASA COUNTY

Mombasa town has begun experiencing the strong winds forecasted by the Kenya Meteorological Department, with residents in Mtongwe reporting power outages suspected to be a result of the harsh weather conditions.

The winds, which started picking up earlier today, are expected to intensify through the weekend, reaching speeds of up to 18 meters per second. Authorities warn that the strong gusts could cause structural damage and disrupt essential services in the affected counties.

Tana River and 14 other countiesβ€”Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Mandera, Isiolo, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Wajir, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwaleβ€”are under alert as the region braces for worsening conditions. Coastal residents have also been strongly urged to avoid using boats and venturing out to sea due to increasingly strong waves that pose a danger to Fishermen and open sea travellers. Authorities warn that the combination of high winds and rough seas could lead to capsizing incidents and loss of life if caution is not observed.

EIGHT KILLED IN DEADLY KIBRA FIRE, ONE MISSING

Eight people have died and seven others are hospitalized after a fire broke out around 3 a.m. Saturday in Kichinjio, Kibra. One person remains missing.

The cause of the fire is still unknown, and police have launched investigations. Some bodies were burned beyond recognition and taken to Nairobi Funeral Home for identification.

Kibra Police Commander Patricia Yegon confirmed the incident. The fire is the latest in a string of similar incidents, including one last month in Line Saba that left many homeless.

Despite Governor Sakaja’s 2023 promise to station a standby fire engine in Kibra after the Toi Market fire, residents say no engine has been deployed to date. Calls are growing for urgent fire safety measures in the area.

FOUR ARMED ROBBERS ARRESTED, FI****MS RECOVERED IN NAIROBI

May 23, 2025 – Nairobi:

Four suspectsβ€”three Ugandans and a Kenyanβ€”were arrested in a DCI-led operation across Dandora, Saika, Huruma, and Pumwani following a string of armed robberies in Nairobi and Western Kenya.

Two pistols, an AK-47 rifle, and 50 rounds of ammunition were recovered.

The suspectsβ€”Sipholi Sam Wafula, Ogomba Alex, Mohammed Musa, and Wafula Clintonβ€”were tracked through coordinated intelligence work. Clinton, the alleged ringleader, was arrested with a loaded pistol in Pumwani.

The arrests thwarted a planned robbery in Eastleigh. The four are in DCI custody at Starehe, with arraignment expected after an identification parade.

Investigations continue as other gang members remain at large.

REGIONAL LEADERS AND LOCALS PROTEST MURKOMEN'S ORDER ON MASALANI PROTECTED AREA

Fafi MP Salah Yakub was the first to oppose Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen’s decision to designate parts of Masalani in Garissa and Tana River counties as protected areas under the National Intelligence Service (NIS), calling it oppressive and a threat to regional stability.

His concerns were echoed by Galole MP Said Buya Hiribae, who linked the order to a separate land row in Kinakomba’s Jamhuri Area, where communal land was allegedly sold to the Interior Ministry without public participation. Hiribae accused the NIS and county officials of collusion and demanded investigations.

Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana, the latest leader to protest, condemned the May 16 gazette notice as vague and unlawful. He noted that neither Tana River nor Garisaa County Governments were consulted, arguing that such a move disregards devolution and local governance, He vowed to pursue the matter in the Senate and courts if not revoked.

Amid rising protests, locals demand transparency and justice, accusing the government of ignoring community rights and legal process.
