Recently, a three-week HIV counsellors’ training programme in Kajiado County took place at Olarriak Place, Kajiado Town.
This initiative is the first of its kind in the entire country, positioning Kajiado County as a national pioneer in developing structured, advanced solutions for enhancing HIV counselling and treatment services.
The programme successfully trained a cohort of counsellors drawn from various health facilities across the county. Throughout the three weeks, participants were equipped with modern counselling techniques, hands-on skills, and essential resources needed to strengthen HIV prevention, testing, treatment support, and psychosocial care. The training emphasized client-centered approaches, strengthened competencies in disclosure processes, adherence counselling, adolescent-friendly services, data management, and effective linkage-to-care.
The meeting reviewed the current gaps in counselling capacity across facilities, highlighting the need for strengthened skills in psychosocial support, disclosure counselling, adherence monitoring, adolescent-friendly services, data documentation, and linkage-to-care processes. Participants also assessed existing training materials and agreed to standardize them in line with national HIV counselling guidelines
During the meeting, partners and county officials acknowledged the significant progress made and the transformative potential of the trained personnel in improving service delivery within the county’s HIV response. Discussions also highlighted the importance of ongoing mentorship, continuous professional development, and structured follow-up mechanisms to ensure sustained impact.
Looking ahead, the trained counsellors will officially participate in their first major county event—World AIDS Day, scheduled for 1st December 2025 at Ngong Stadium. This event will showcase Kajiado County’s leadership and commitment to strengthening HIV services and community engagement.
The meeting concluded with a clear action plan aimed at building a competent team of HIV counsellors capable of delivering high-quality, client-centered counselling services across Kajiado County. Follow-up sessions and post-training evaluation mechanisms were also agreed upon to track progress and ensure sustainability.
Finally, there is a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to maintain the momentum, scale future training efforts, and continue positioning Kajiado County as a leader in innovative health solutions.
