This is Solyo Field. It looks good, right?
WRONG!
This field was once a very green field, very flat with a balanced topography, and a field that was always chosen for National and Province (now County) celebrations (like the one we have tomorrow). BUT here is the state of the field now (image taken on Saturday, 30th May 2026).
The field was (and still is) under construction and upgrading to a mini stadium under the leadership of CS Oparanya (the governor then) and the late Hon. John Musilwa (he requested for its upgrade when he was the MCA Isukha Central Ward).
The field is yet to be handed over to the schools (Solyo Primary and Secondary), the church (sponsor) and the community; but who will hand over when no leader is concerned about its state?
The field used to have a mesh fence and two gates (gate A and B). As of today, there is no gate and no fence at all.
Solyo community is crying for help!
Bullfighting has destructed the field. It is no longer for school sports, but for bulls.
When we ask the bullfighters and bull owners, they say the field was given to them by the governor, H.E FCPA Fernandes Barasa, OGW (who declared it open for bullfighting during the burial of Hon. John Musilwa on 12th April 2025).
So the bullfighters and bull owners say that until the governor calls it off, they will continue using the field.
We humbly request the governor, we are not against bullfighting, it is our culture, and we love, but please, stop it in the school field. Solyo Secondary student agriculture projects are destroyed, school fence is uprooted, gates disappeared, fence for the field is not there, school going students skip classes to attend the bullfighting activity, and teachers cannot teach for those hours the activity is on, because of the noise and disruptions.
Please, Governor, stop bullfighting in Solyo field. Purchase a piece of land away from schools and health facilities solely for bullfighting, and save the community of Solyo plus the students.
We hope this will resonate with you. Consider our plea. God bless you, God bless Kakamega County.
