It was a great honor to host the UNHCR KENYA delegation at our office. We engaged in a productive and insightful discussion on strengthening the creative industry, with a strong focus on creating opportunities for young creatives to develop their careers, access skills development, and generate sustainable income through the creative economy. We appreciate the meaningful exchange and look forward to future collaboration.

For the past five years, we have been telling powerful stories through films and documentaries—stories of resilience, hope, and success from the people we live with, and from those who have come to our community from far away. But along the way, we realised something important was missing. We were telling stories about people, yet we had not fully looked at the environment they live in ,or how waste is managed around them. When we began to ask these questions, we discovered a serious challenge: our community is struggling with solid waste management. Waste is everywhere, polluting our surroundings and putting our health and dignity at risk.
This inspired us to start the Solid Waste Management Initiative.
This project is about the well-being of our community. It aims to stop pollution and create a cleaner, safer, and healthier environment for everyone. At the same time, it creates livelihood opportunities for youth and women who are idle and vulnerable, by engaging them in waste collection, plastic sorting, and recycling activities.
This initiative is not just about waste it is about dignity, opportunity, and protecting the future of our community.
If you would like to learn more about this initiative, explore partnership opportunities, or support this work in any way, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Plastic is often seen as waste, yet within the Kakuma community it has become an opportunity for positive change. Through our solid waste management project, we empower youth and women from both refugee and host communities to collect and recycle plastic, improving environmental health, reducing climate pollution, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities. This approach promotes social inclusion, economic resilience, and long-term environmental sustainability within the Kakuma context.

Gender-Based Violence is something many of us once saw as normal in our households until we realized how deeply it harms people.
It pushes some to make painful decisions, and others even to take their own lives. Every human being deserves to be treated equally and given a fair chance in all areas of life, including opportunities to grow and succeed.
That’s why we created this short film to raise awareness and inspire positive behavior change within our community.

Recycling plastic is very important both for the environment and for communities like .
Plastic takes hundreds of years to decompose. When burned or dumped, it pollutes the air, soil, and water. Recycling helps reduce this pollution and keeps our environment cleaner and safer.
Plastic recycling is also a source of livelihood, collectors, sorters, and recyclers can earn income while protecting the planet. It’s a win-win for sustainability and youth empowerment.
Our Solid Waste Management Volunteers work tirelessly to collect, sort, and deliver plastic to recycling facilities. Instead of being thrown away, plastic is reused and transformed into new products, reducing waste and inspiring innovation.

As one of the proud partners of this year’s Mazingira Day celebrations in Kakuma, we’re excited to share the progress of our Solid Waste Management Project ,one of the most successful initiatives improving the cleanliness of Kakuma 1 Refugee Camp.
Through our dedicated team’s tireless efforts, we’ve managed both organic and non-organic waste in two of the largest markets, Somali Market and Ethiopian Market and reaching nearly 30% of households in Kakuma 1.
Despite the camp’s congestion, our mission remains clear: to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for every resident.
Let’s continue to protect our planet - plant a tree, keep your space clean, stop pollution and be the change.
Happy Mazingira Day from SoundForLife!
