It often leads to a disconnect from reality, making it difficult for individuals to distinguish what is real from what is not. The condition typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood, and while it is relatively rare (affecting about 0.3–0.7% of the global population), it is considered one of the most disabling psychiatric disorders.
The exact cause of schizophrenia is not fully understood but is believed to result from a combination of:
Genetic factors (strong hereditary link)
Brain structure and chemical imbalances (e.g., dopamine and glutamate)
Environmental triggers (e.g., prenatal complications, early trauma, substance use like cannabis)
Symptoms
Schizophrenia symptoms are typically categorized into three main groups:
1. Positive Symptoms (Psychotic behaviors not seen in healthy individuals)
Hallucinations (commonly hearing voices)
Delusions (false beliefs, often paranoid or grandiose)
Disorganized thinking and speech
Bizarre or erratic behavior
