The incident at Nguuni Primary School is deeply troubling and should never have happened, I strongly condemn it.
Schools have a duty to provide a safe learning environment for children, and pupils should not be exposed to activities that place them at risk of serious injury. The reported decision to have Grade 6 learners prepare porridge in the absence of a school cook raises serious questions about safety procedures, supervision, and the protection of children while at school.
The injuries suffered by the pupil are unfortunate and heartbreaking. A thorough investigation should be conducted to establish exactly what happened, determine whether safety protocols were followed, and ensure accountability where necessary. Measures should also be put in place to prevent similar incidents from occurring in any school.
The priority now should be the boy's recovery and ensuring that all learners are protected from avoidable dangers while pursuing their education.
