Happy Mazingira Day!
Today, October 10, 2025, Kenya celebrates Mazingira Day, a public holiday dedicated to environmental conservation. "Mazingira" is the Swahili word for "environment".
The holiday is part of Kenya's broader initiative to address climate change and promote a greener, more sustainable future for the country.
2025 theme and activities
This year's theme is "Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship," emphasizing the role of every Kenyan in protecting the environment.
Activities for the day include:
Tree planting campaigns: Cabinet Secretaries, along with other officials and community members, are leading efforts to plant fruit trees in primary schools across the country.
Community cleanup drives: In addition to tree planting, citizens are encouraged to participate in cleaning up their local environments.
Educational initiatives: The day serves as a national platform to raise awareness about environmental issues, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution.
The history of the holiday
The October 10th holiday has been known by several names over the years:
Moi Day: Originally established to honor former President Daniel arap Moi.
Utamaduni Day: The holiday was renamed in 2020 to celebrate Kenya's cultural diversity.
Mazingira Day: In April 2024, President William Ruto officially renamed the holiday Mazingira Day, making environmental conservation its central purpose.
