Apple Wax Explained
Food-grade waxes like shellac (from lac bugs) and carnauba (from Brazilian palm leaves) are applied after washing removes natural wax, enhancing shine and shelf life up to months in cold storage.

These are FDA-approved as safe in small amounts, with no major health risks for most people when eaten after washing, though rare allergies or trapped bacteria under poor coatings may occur.

Petroleum-based or non-edible waxes, sometimes used illicitly, can introduce irritants or chemicals if not rinsed off

Harmful Food Preservatives
Certain preservatives extend shelf life but link to health issues like allergies, or hormone disruption with long-term exposure.​

BHA/BHT (in breads, cereals, snacks): Antioxidants preventing rancidity; potential carcinogens, banned in some European countries and Japan.​

Sodium Nitrite/Nitrate (processed meats): Form cancer-causing nitrosamines when heated; restricted in Norway, Sweden.​

Sodium Benzoate (beverages, sauces): May form benzene with vitamin C, tied to hyperactivity and allergies.​

Potassium Bromate (baked goods): Dough strengthener, carcinogenic; banned in EU, Canada, China.​

Sulphites/Benzoates (dried fruits, wines): Trigger asthma, bronchitis, heart issues.​
