TUZA AWARDS & SOKO RECAP
CREATIVE WEAR BY
When I took on the Tuza Awards 2025 runway challenge, I knew I wanted to create something that wasn’t just visually striking but also deeply meaningful. I chose repurposed rice and sugar sacks as my primary materials—not just for their availability but for the statement they carried. Every piece of fabric had a history, once used for trade and nourishment, now transformed into a symbol of sustainability and innovation. The structured jacket, with its asymmetrical panels, merges natural sack tones with bold blue and white contrasts, while the raw, unfinished edges reflect authenticity and heritage. The tailored patchwork pants embrace a deconstructed aesthetic, incorporating the original branding from the sacks to preserve their story.
The process was both challenging and rewarding. Sourcing the materials was an adventure in itself, requiring patience and resourcefulness. Sewing the ensemble demanded a balance of machine precision and the delicate art of hand-stitching, a technique that slowed me down but also made me appreciate every stitch. The act of crafting this piece reinforced my belief that fashion is not just about clothing—it’s about storytelling, identity, and impact.
"The outfit stood out—not just for its aesthetics but for its deeper meaning."
More than just a runway look, this piece embodies upcycling, proving that discarded materials can be reborn into something extraordinary. It champions slow fashion, blending handcraftsmanship with machine work to reduce waste and energy use. The durability of the sack fabric ensures longevity, reinforcing sustainability beyond a single wear. Most importantly, it connects to our cultural heritage, turning everyday materials into wearable art that speaks to history, resilience, and eco-conscious design.
This experience has been transformative, reminding me that fashion is a powerful tool—not just for expression but for change. Sustainability and creativity can coexist, and through this design, I hope to inspire others to rethink waste and embrace the beauty of upcycled fashion.
