�What Happened to Christ Is Counted as Having Happened to Us�
Yesterday we learned that identification means becoming identified with another so completely that what happens to one is counted as having happened to the other.
This truth takes us into the very heart of the Gospel.
Christianity is not merely the story of God forgiving guilty people. God certainly forgives us�but He went much further than forgiveness. He united us with His Son, Jesus Christ.
The Gospel declares that Jesus did not merely die for us; in God's redemptive reckoning, we died with Him. He was not merely buried for us; we were buried with Him. When He was raised, we were raised with Him. And because He lives, we now live in union with Him.
GALATIANS 2:20 � THE LANGUAGE OF IDENTIFICATION
�I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.� � Galatians 2:20 KJV
Notice Paul's language: �I am crucified with Christ.�
Paul does not merely say, �Christ was crucified for me.� That is gloriously true, but Paul goes further: �I am crucified WITH Christ.�
This is identification.
The Cross therefore has two dimensions that we must understand:
Christ FOR us � substitution.
We WITH Christ � identification and union.
He took our place so completely that His death becomes the basis of our death to the old life, and we are united with Him so completely that His resurrection becomes the basis of our new life.
1. CHRIST BECAME OUR REPRESENTATIVE
To understand identification, we must first understand representation.
God deals with humanity through representative heads. What the representative does can have consequences for those represented by him.
ROMANS 5:12 � ADAM REPRESENTED THE OLD HUMANITY
�Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:� � Romans 5:12 KJV
Sin entered the human race through one man�Adam.
Adam was not acting merely as a private individual. His fall affected the humanity that came from him.
This establishes an important principle:
One man acted�and many were affected.
Paul develops this further:
�For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shal
