ISIOLO POLITICS:
From Brotherhood to Rivalry
A Call for Dialogue and Unity
By Hamza Yussuf, Journalist
For the past two weeks, Isiolo County has been at the center of intense political drama from impeachment trials to court battles. These events have sparked widespread misunderstanding, misinformation, and mistrust, even among former close allies.
One such alliance is between Isiolo Speaker Mohamed Roba, popularly known as MRQ, and Governor Abdi Ibrahim Guyo. The two were once described as inseparable “siblings in struggle and in success”often seen dining together, strategizing together, and shaping the county’s destiny side by side. To many Isiolo residents, their friendship represented stability and unity.
But the winds have shifted. While insiders insist their bond is not entirely broken only “territories being redrawn”ahead of the 2027 elections The recent fallout has left a dent in public perception.
MRQ’s political ambitions remain unclear. He has not declared whether he will vie for the Senate or a parliamentary seat. In an exclusive interview with us on Thursday, July 24, Speaker Roba opened up about various pressing issues including the widening rift between the County Assembly and Governor Guyo.
He walked us through the impeachment process, detailing what transpired, who played what role, and how the matter unfolded behind closed doors. Roba strongly denied allegations that he orchestrated the move, stating the decision solely rested with the Members of County Assembly (MCAs).
From our analysis, Speaker Roba still holds respect for Governor Guyo and cherishes the bond they once had. Many Isiolo residents are praying for reconciliation, as the current division has deeply polarized the county. People now identify with either Governor Guyo or Speaker MRQ
a dangerous trend that could derail development.
We are yet to get Governor Guyo’s side of the story but we remain open and ready to hear from him. Our platform is committed to giving every leader, regardless of affiliation, a fair and respectful space to share their views. We call on Isiolo’s leadership to come forward, not to trade blame, but to chart a new course for unity and transformation.
Importantly, MRQ in our interview refrained from personal attacks
instead calling for professionalism and dialogue. We hope others will follow the same tone and decorum.
During our recent visit to Isiolo, we took time to visit one of its iconic parks witnessing breathtaking scenes of wildlife, buzzing tourist activity, and dozens of safari vehicles bringing in visitors from around the globe. Hotels are fully booked, and interest in exploring Northern Kenya is on the rise.
However, the current political wrangles risk derailing all this progress. Political instability breeds fear, discourages investors, and can tarnish the county’s emerging image as a tourism hub.
Security agencies have worked tirelessly to calm tensions, but this isn’t just a security issue it’s a leadership issue. Dialogue is the key. Unfortunately, vulnerable youth are sometimes manipulated to further political agendas, risking chaos and bloodshed.
County Commissioner Mr. Geoffrey Omoding, clearly overwhelmed, expressed deep concern. He warned that the ongoing political feud, if unchecked, could cause more damage than banditry. “We hold the leaders accountable,” he said, though implementation remains a challenge.
Every evening, if you scroll through social media, political arguments dominate family chats, youth forums, and professional spaces. Sadly, the tone is often divisive and toxic. Rarely do people discuss peaceful solutions only blame.
Truth in Isiolo has become elusive. Everyone has a version of the story, and many follow leaders blindly, without question.
So we ask: HOW LONG WILL THIS CONTINUE?
It’s time for Isiolo to reclaim its dignity a county once known for peace, unity, and free movement. The shadows of tension and division must not define our future.
Let’s listen to one another.Let’s offer every leader a seat at the table. Let’s restore trust and work toward the Isiolo we all dream of united, peaceful, and prosperous.
Don’t miss the full interview with Speaker Mohamed Roba airing soon. It’s one conversation you wouldn’t want to miss.
May peace prevail.
