A multi-stakeholder training was organized by CECOME, bringing together key actors to reflect on collaboration in the fight against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

One message came through clearly: GBV remains a reality in our communities. However, thanks to the tireless efforts of organizations such as CECOME and other partners, significant progress has been made in creating awareness, strengthening response mechanisms, and improving how survivors are supported.

The discussion reaffirmed that ending GBV is a shared responsibility. Sustainable progress will only be achieved through stronger synergy among all stakeholdersโ€”including government agencies, civil society, community leaders, faith-based organizations, law enforcement, and the media.

As media practitioners, we have a critical role to play in reporting responsibly, amplifying survivor-centered narratives, educating the public, and holding duty bearers accountable. Together, our collective voice and action can help build safer, more just communities for everyone.

School Bus Carrying Pupils Involved in Fatal Road Crash in Eastern Uganda

A school bus transporting pupils from Kings David Junior School, Ndejje, was involved in a fatal road accident in Kapchorwa District on Thursday evening, Ugandan police have confirmed.

According to Michael Kananura, spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the crash occurred at around 8:00 p.m. in Chekwatit Village, Kimawa Parish, Kawowo Sub-county. The bus, registration number UA 108BQ, was carrying pupils at the time of the accident.
Police and other emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene and have been conducting rescue operations while working to establish the exact number of fatalities and injuries.

The incident marks the third major school bus accident reported in Uganda within a week. On July 10, another school bus was struck by a train at a railway crossing in Mukono District, leaving one teacher dead and several pupils injured.

Authorities have launched investigations into the cause of the latest crash as rescue efforts continue.

The High Court has convicted former Kenya Air Force Major Peter Mwaura Mugure over the 2019 murders of his estranged wife, Joyce Syombua, and their two children, Shanice Maua and Prince Michael.

The court found that the killings were premeditated, ruling that the accused lured the family to Nanyuki under the guise of exercising court-approved visitation rights before murdering them and secretly burying their bodies in a shallow grave. He has been sentenced to life imprisonment on all three counts of murder.

The case, which has taken nearly seven years to conclude, has drawn widespread public attention and renewed conversations about domestic violence, child protection, and the importance of recognizing warning signs in abusive relationships.

May the souls of Joyce, Shanice, and Prince continue to rest in peace.
