The Orange Democratic Movement top leadership insists that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is no longer the party’s Secretary General, despite conflicting legal developments and grave public debate.



The party’s National Executive Committee in Mombasa resolved to remove Sifuna on February 11, citing indiscipline and alleged violations of party protocol, appointing Busia Woman Rep Catherine Omanyo as acting Secretary General.

ODM chairperson Gladys Wanga told reporters the decision was backed by 34 of 40 NEC members, claiming the majority acted within constitutional authority to safeguard party cohesion.

However, the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal issued conservatory orders blocking implementation and gazettement of the resolution, keeping the ouster from taking legal effect.

The tribunal also barred publication of the NEC decision in the Kenya Gazette until a full hearing on February 26, a reprieve that Sifuna says protects his leadership for now.

Sifuna has rejected his removal as illegal and unprocedural, stating he remains the duly elected Secretary General and will challenge the decision in court and public opinion.

Senior party loyalists, including Godfrey Osotsi and others, have publicly defended Sifuna, dismissing the ouster as irregular and calling on members to stay united and calm amid factional tension.
Critics within ODM accuse a faction aligned with party leader Oburu Odinga of staging a takeover, deepening divisions as the party navigates strategic direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With the dispute now in legal limbo and internal loyalties tested, both camps remain defiant — the top leadership asserting Sifuna is out, while his allies claim he still leads, highlighting a bitter power struggle.
