African lungfish can survive for days after being caught by fishermen due to two key evolutionary adaptations:

1. Air Breathing: They have a working lung and can breathe atmospheric air, so they don’t suffocate out of water.
2. Moisture Retention: Their skin secretes a thick, mucus cocoon that drastically reduces water loss and prevents them from drying out.

Because of this, fishermen often keep them alive in moist containers or burlap sacks for long periods before bringing them to market. Their metabolism slows, allowing them to endure this stress far longer than any ordinary fish.
