Ovulation and menstrual cycle (menstruation) ✨♀️
The menstrual cycle is a monthly process that prepares the female body for potential pregnancy. It typically lasts about 28 days, although it can range from 21 to 35 days in adults. Here’s a breakdown of the key phases: Phases of the Menstrual Cycle Menstrual Phase (Days 1-5): The cycle begins with menstruation, where the uterine lining sheds if no pregnancy has occurred. This phase lasts about 3 to 7 days. Follicular Phase (Days 1-13): Overlaps with the menstrual phase. The pituitary gland releases follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), stimulating the ovaries to produce follicles. One follicle will mature into an egg. Ovulation (Day 14): Triggered by a surge of luteinizing hormone (LH), ovulation occurs when the mature follicle releases an egg. This is the most fertile period of the cycle. Luteal Phase (Days 15-28): After ovulation, the ruptured follicle transforms into the corpus luteum, which produces progesterone to prepare the uterine lining for a potential pregnancy. If fertilization does not occur, hormone levels drop, leading to the start of menstruation. Key Points Cycle Length: Varies among individuals and can change over time. Signs of Ovulation: Includes increased cervical mucus, slight rise in basal body temperature, and sometimes mild ovulation pain. Fertility Window: The days leading up to and including ovulation are the most fertile for conception.
