Lacrosse Kicks Off in Kakamega: First-Ever Nationals for Kenyan High Schools
Kakamega, Kenya – The sport of lacrosse made history this week as it officially kicked off its first-ever national high school championship in Kenya, hosted in Kakamega. The groundbreaking event has attracted 14 schools from across the country, marking a major milestone in the growth of the game locally.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, Lacrosse Kenya President Sir Cosmas Nabungolo commended the participating schools for their commitment and sacrifice. He emphasized the global relevance of lacrosse, stating:
“Lacrosse is one of the key international sports that, if well embraced, can open doors for our young players to access both academic and athletic opportunities abroad—and even locally.”
The championship is not only a national highlight but also serves as a platform to identify and prepare players for the upcoming U20 international competition in Korea, scheduled for early August.
Kenya Lacrosse CEO Mr. Derrick Sagini also lauded the Ministry of Education and the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) for incorporating lacrosse into the official school sports calendar.
“This is a bold step forward for youth sports development in Kenya,” Sagini said. “We are proud to see lacrosse finally taking root in our education system.”
The championship is expected to elevate the profile of lacrosse and inspire more schools to embrace the sport in the years to come.
