President William Ruto is set to dismiss all principal secretaries and some of his close advisers in a move that signals a further dramatic overhaul of his administration.
The planned purge comes hot on the heels of recent widespread demonstrations led by young Kenyans, who have been calling for greater accountability and the sacking of certain officials they accuse of misadvising the President on economic matters.
“It’s a fresh start,” said a senior official familiar with the planned changes but who did not want to be named.
“The President is determined to ensure public resources are no longer stolen and anyone caught will be swiftly investigated and prosecuted.”
Among those reportedly on the chopping block is the President’s economic adviser David Ndii, who has been a target of the protesters’ anger.
The success of these sweeping reforms will be crucial in determining the trajectory of Ruto’s presidency and his ability to address the pressing issues facing the nation.
The sweeping shake-up is expected to occur once new Cabinet ministers are named and approved by Parliament, as Ruto seeks to “reenergise the fight against corruption” - a key demand from the Gen Z demonstrators.
“The President knows and is clear that time is up for anyone who slept on the job,” an MP who enjoys a close relationship with Ruto. .m_media kitui
