PRESS STATEMENT
Call for Justice and Accountability Following the Death of Margaret Katiwa from Masaani, Kyua, Katangi while undergoing treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital .
Date: 28th May 2026
Issued by: Ilumaita News Centre
It is with deep sorrow and outrage that Ilumaita News Centre confirms the death of Ms. Margaret Katiwa, a resident of Masaani, Kyua, Katangi, who died today, 28th May 2026, from injuries sustained after she was allegedly set on fire in early May 2026.
According to reports received from family and community members, the attack was linked to claims that Mrs. Katiwa was hiding an arson suspect. We emphasize that these claims remain UNSUBSTANTIATED and no formal charges have been brought against her at the time of the incident.
No person should face mob violence or extrajudicial punishment, regardless of suspicion or allegation. The taking of life in this manner is a grave violation of the right to life and the rule of law as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya.
We therefore demand:
1. SWIFT AND THOROUGH INVESTIGATION by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations - DCI and the National Police Service into the circumstances surrounding her death.
2. IMMEDIATE ARREST AND PROSECUTION of all people found to be responsible, in line with due process.
3. PROTECTION FOR THE VICTIM'S FAMILY against intimidation or further harm as they seek justice.
Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of Mrs. Margaret Katiwa during this painful time. We stand with them in demanding accountability and an end to mob violence in our community.
Signed, John Mumo
