Kibwezi Town is one of the historic urban centres of Makueni County, located along the Nairobi Mombasa corridor.

Its history is closely connected to the railway, colonial administration and long standing Kamba settlement.

One documented local interpretation says the name Kibwezi came from the Kamba expression meaning “to stand akimbo”(kwîkwata kîvose), associated with farmers reacting to the noise of the early railway.

Another older account links the name to coins used by coastal caravaneers, showing that its origin has more than one historical interpretation.

Kibwezi also has a remarkable missionary history. In 1891, the Scottish Mission established one of its early stations here, making the town important in education and health development.

Over the past five years, Kibwezi has continued to expand through new businesses, improved lighting, transport activity, government services and growing creative industries.

The town retains strong Kamba traditions, including cultural music, storytelling, farming practices and community celebrations.

Today, Kibwezi remains an important commercial gateway linking Makueni with the Coast and Nairobi.

Mbui Nzau, meaning “White Goat,” is a group of hills in Kibwezi, Makueni County, with deep cultural and spiritual significance among the Akamba people.

According to Kamba oral traditions, the hills were regarded as a sacred place, or Ithembo, where ancestral ceremonies, sacrifices and prayers were performed during times of hardship, drought, disease and other calamities.

One of the best known traditional stories connects the name Mbui Nzau to a mysterious white goat. Elders narrate that the goat would mysteriously appear on the hill in the early morning, shortly after sunrise.

Its repeated appearances became part of the folklore surrounding the sacred hills and contributed to the name “Mbui Nzau.”

For generations, the Kamba have associated the area with ancestral spirits, sacred rituals and supernatural occurrences.

Today, Mbui Nzau remains an important part of Kamba heritage, oral history and cultural identity, while also attracting interest as a natural and cultural tourism site.
