The Mandera County Climate Change Unit (CCU) successfully conducted a community validation exercise for the Draft Dandu Hill Ecosystem Restoration Plan in Dandu Town. The exercise brought together a diverse group of participants representing local communities, the County Government, the National Government, and non-state actors.
Community representatives were drawn from various settlements surrounding the Dandu Hill Ecosystem, including Dandu Town, Didkoba, Qarsahama, Dadabo, Kubihalo, Harbuyo, Arges, Lakaro and Abarkato among others. These included youth, women, elders, persons with disabilities (PWDs), members of Community Forest Associations (CFAs), Water Resources Users Associations (WRUAs) and the Ward Climate Change Planning Committee (WCCPC).
Government representation included officials from the Sub-County administration, teachers from the local schools as well as National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs).
During the session, the CCU team presented the draft plan, which was well received by participants who commended the quality of the work.
Valuable feedback and additional insights were provided by the community, which will be incorporated to enrich and strengthen the final document.
As part of the validation process, the CCU team and selected community representatives conducted a joint field visit to Dandu Hill on the second day to collect further situational data and observations relevant to the restoration efforts.
The updated plan, incorporating community inputs and field findings will now be finalized and forwarded to the County Executive for approval, adoption, and official signing by H.E. the Governor.
The County Government of Mandera is committed to an inclusive, community-led climate action and ecosystem restoration.
