KATHWANA MARKET GOES TWO WEEKS WITHOUT WATER AS RESIDENTS STRUGGLE AND CALL FOR RESTORATION OF SUPPLY

Kathwana Market, the headquarters of Tharaka Nithi County, has reportedly gone for two weeks without a water supply.

Residents and business operators in the market have expressed frustration over the prolonged shortage, saying they have been forced to live and work without access to the essential commodity.

Gaaru TV has obtained photos showing pickups and motorcycles ferrying water from the nearby River Maara to the market. A 20-litre jerrican of water is reportedly being sold for KSh 30, with no explanation having been offered by the relevant authorities regarding the disruption.

The residents are now calling for the immediate restoration of water services to ease their suffering, noting that Kathwana is not only the county headquarters but also a municipality that should be enjoying reliable and uninterrupted water supply.

THE SECRET BEHIND THE THUNDEROUS SOUND OF THARAKA TRADITIONAL DRUMS

Many cultural enthusiasts have long wondered why traditional drums from Tharaka produce a louder, deeper, and more distinctive sound than those used by many other communities.

The answer lies in a unique cultural practice that has been preserved for generations. While most traditional drums are crafted using the skins of goats or sheep, authentic Tharaka drums are traditionally made from the skin of the Nile Monitor lizard, locally known as Nchaana.

This rare material gives the drums unmatched strength, resonance, and richness of sound. Cultural practitioners say that a single drum covered with monitor lizard skin can produce a powerful beat capable of outmatching several drums made from goat or sheep skin.

For this reason, Tharaka drums remain highly treasured cultural instruments, playing a central role in traditional ceremonies, celebrations, and cultural performances. Their thunderous sound is not only a symbol of craftsmanship but also a proud reflection of the rich cultural heritage of the Tharaka people.

NJUKI VOWS TO SACK DOCTORS AT CHUKA HOSPITAL INVOLVED IN PATIENT REFERRALS TO PRIVATE CLINICS

Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki has unearthed what he described as a scheme in which some doctors at Chuka County Referral Hospital allegedly refer patients to their privately owned hospitals and clinics.

Njuki cited a recent case in which a patient was referred to a private health facility in Chuka Town, where the patient reportedly died during a medical procedure and was later taken back to Chuka County Referral Hospital.

The governor warned that the county government will take firm action against rogue doctors involved in such practices, saying patient welfare must come first.

He also dismissed threats of industrial action by medics should disciplinary action be taken against those implicated, insisting that accountability in the health sector will not be compromised.
