Cheap clients are the most difficult humans you'll ever deal with in this and the next lifetimes. I've always urged my mentees to never price to please clients. Ensure your price matches your expertise and the value you bring to the table. Take this advice seriously!

🔴 UNPOPULAR OPINION

If you mostly depend on the jobs you see posted on social media platforms, you might struggle getting and sustaining SMM jobs and scaling up the SMM career ladder. In most cases, such clients are on the hunt for cheap labor. Instead of increasing your salary after a while, they'd rather hunt for another cheap social media manager. You'll be shocked to discover they're just middlemen. Find a way to connect with the real clients.

I'd also like to say you should not use freelance job marketplaces if you want to attract premium rates for your services. Those marketplaces are a race to the bottom; clients most likely choose lowest bidder with an impressive portfolio.

PS: I run a small Telegram space for social media managers where we share tips, job leads, and hold each other accountable. It’s a quieter, more stable, and more focused place. I welcome you to join 👉 t.me/socialmediamanagers1

I'm happy that people have stopped "pitching" like this. A few months ago everyone was using the same template and it was hard to tell apart this SMM from the other. Have a unique way of pitching yourself; don't be like the majority! Something else you need to keep in mind is that clients have different needs. If you say you'll make 20-24 posts per month, do all niches need such an amount of posts? What if they're few or too much for my niche? What if I already have a fast growing page? What if I need just one post per week?

I'm simply saying: please take time to learn each client. If possible do a quick audit of a prospect's page and recommend the right "medicine". They'll hire you immediately! I understand the posts we make in public groups cannot suit all clients, but if you can, please focus on case studies. They'll endear you to just any type of client.

Please repost 🔄; it means a lot to me ❤️

So, let's talk about pricing. You see that mama in Gikomba selling mtumba? (Mtumba a.k.a mtush is second-hand clothes, Gikomba is a busy open-air market in Nairobi, Kenya)
She may not have an MBA, but she knows business. Let me show you how her pricing wisdom can level up your social media management game:

1. She Knows Her Costs
Before she even sets up at 5AM, she already knows:

✅How much she spent on the bale
✅Transport cost
✅Stall fee

→ Tip: Know your SMM operational costs before setting your price. Don’t just pick random figures.

2. She Has a Set Profit Margin
If a jacket cost her $1, she may sell it for $4 because she’s factored in both profit and the risk of dead stock.

→ Tip: Always price to profit just to survive.

3. She Knows Her Floor Price (Minimum She Can Accept)
When you bargain, she may say: “Sister, $3 is the last price”.
She isn’t guessing. That’s the lowest she can go and still make a profit.

→ Tip: Set your minimum acceptable rate (MAR) and stick to it.

4. She’s Not Desperate to Sell to Everyone
She lets a stubborn customer walk away because she knows someone else will come.

→ Tip: Don't undercharge just to “secure the deal.” Let your dream clients find you.

5. She Doesn’t Apologize for Her Prices
She’ll tell you, “it is a Turkey camera (grade A quality)” with confidence. And you believe her.

→ Tip: Own your value. Your delivery, experience, and results justify your rate.

6. She Avoids the “I Think” Newbie Mentality
A Gikomba mama doesn’t say “I think this dress is worth $5” She KNOWS it's worth $5.
Newbies in freelancing say, “I think $300 is fair,” for every niche, every service. And clients instantly know they're dealing with an amateur.

Veterans, even with 1 year in the game, say:

✅$200 for content creation
✅$350 for strategy
✅$150 for Instagram management only

→ Tip: Price based on clear deliverables, effort, niche demands. Learn your value and present it like an expert who truly knows what they're doing.

"I've applied all the tips I learnt from you and other veteran SMMs online but still I'm not getting even a single job. Is there anything else I should do before I give up?"

Dear friends, I want you to understand the following 6 things: one, that social media management is among booming online jobs at the moment, and so many businesses and individuals wouldn't mind some little or big help with managing their socials. You can offer that service to them at a fee or even freely if you wanna build your portfolio quickly. How you package/sell yourself is all that matters if you already have SMM skills (copywriting, graphic design, communication skills, scheduling, video editing, e.t.c.). I'm saying you should sell yourself as a solution to a certain problem rather than an SMM service provider.

Two, visibility is the biggest difference between me and you. You may have noticed I'm visible across all major and little known platforms. I make "noise" daily and consistently. If you look up the keywords "social media management" and "social media manager" on any platform, you'll likely find my name in the top results. That's how I'm able to get inbound leads almost every month all year round. Video is the easiest way to build your visibility within a few weeks. If you've been posting still posts, try video before even approaching potential clients. Be as visible as possible. You cannot be visible if you post today and post again after 10 months.

Three, you have to let people know you offer a service. Posting tips alone won't help you. Imagine you were the client and want to hire a social media manager; would you DM people randomly? That's why you should couple being visible with reaching out to potential clients. By potential clients I mean anyone that could consume your service. Applying to the jobs you see posted on different platforms may not yield results faster because of the stiff competition — everyone is already applying for the few jobs. Just ensure your strategy is different from what others are doing.

Four, a live portfolio is a real gold mine. Clients won't think twice before hiring me if I already manage platforms. Do you think it'd be the same if I sent them a Canva portfolio? They need to trust your ability before investing in your service.

Five, not many potential clients even know the value of social media management. It's upon you to present convincing case studies and subsequently sell your service.

Lastly, consistency is key. If you are visible, are able to pitch your services correctly, and can maintain the same momentum for months, you'll likely see results and change your life for good. It may not happen today but your efforts will definitely pay off soonest possible. Please take this advice seriously and check the first comment below!
