Nyamita's strong showing in Recent President Ruto's visit to Migori exposes Ayacko's soft underbelly
President William Ruto's recent development tour of Migori County provided a clear window into the shifting balance of political power between Uriri MP Mark Nyamita and Governor Ochilo Ayacko.
Across the four stops, Dede, Sibuoche, Masaba and Posta Ground, the contrast in public reception was striking.
Nyamita consistently commanded warmer responses, even in areas long regarded as the governor's territory, while Ayacko struggled to generate the enthusiasm his camp had worked hard to mobilise.
In Dede, Nyamita's reception was unexpectedly solid despite the location being considered Ayacko's home ground and despite intensive mobilisation by the governor's allies the previous day. The pattern became clearer in Sibuoche, Nyamita's own backyard, where the MP received an enthusiastic welcome while the governor's presence barely registered.
Masaba, a relatively neutral venue, produced the most awkward moment for the county leadership. When Ayacko raised the issue of the collapsed Getong'anya Factory and appealed to the President for support to revive it, he was openly heckled. The reaction suggested residual public frustration over the factory's failure during his tenure.
The most telling scene unfolded at Posta Ground, traditionally a barometer of Migori's political mood. Despite heavy mobilisation, Ayacko did not receive the reception his team had anticipated. Nyamita, by contrast, appeared to outshine the governor, drawing a more responsive crowd that directed its displeasure at the county boss.
Taken together, these episodes point to a noticeable erosion of the governor's grassroots appeal. Nyamita's ability to attract positive energy even outside his immediate base suggests he has cultivated a broader network of support than many had assumed.
For Ayacko, the tour served as an early warning that his political capital is under strain less than a year before the next electoral cycle begins in earnest.
