UPDATE: BARINGO COUNTY Now Has Four Municipalities After Eldama Ravine, Mogotio, and Marigat Are Upgraded
Baringo County has officially increased its number of municipalities to four following the conferment of municipality status to Eldama Ravine, Mogotio, and Marigat. This is in addition to Kabarnet, which had already attained municipality status earlier.
The announcement was made through Gazette Notice No. 8742, dated 26th May 2025, by Governor Benjamin Chesire Cheboi in accordance with Article 184 of the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, the Urban Areas and Cities Act, 2011, and the Urban Areas and Cities (Amendment) Act, 2019.
The conferment follows approval by the County Assembly of Baringo and marks a significant step toward strengthening urban governance and infrastructure development in the region.
“This move aligns with our commitment to improving urban planning, service delivery, and economic growth in our towns. It ensures that Eldama Ravine, Mogotio, and Marigat receive the resources and governance structures befitting their growing populations and strategic importance,” said Governor Cheboi.
As municipalities, the towns will now operate under municipal boards and receive enhanced funding and technical support, allowing for better roads, water services, waste management, and economic planning.
With Kabarnet, Eldama Ravine, Mogotio, and Marigat now all classified as municipalities, Baringo joins other counties in advancing the devolution of urban management and creating inclusive and sustainable towns in line with Kenya Vision 2030.
Urban residents, local leaders, and investors have welcomed the move, calling it a timely recognition of the towns' rapid growth and economic potential.
