Global partners roll out project to support Sudan’s smallholders, aim to address urgent food challenges

Partners from across Africa and beyond have launched an ambitious initiative aimed at reviving Sudan’s agri-food systems and addressing urgent food insecurity through smallholder support.

The project sets bold, measurable goals. For the 2025–2026 season, it plans to distribute 260,000 metric tons of subsidized fertilizers and essential farm inputs, covering 1.7 million acres of farmland. The initiative intends to reach 350,000 farmers directly and support two million households

Sustainable farming initiative helps Ethiopian farmers restore land and yields

The program’s focus on integrated soil fertility management aims to counteract the effects of acidity, nutrient depletion, and erosion that had left much of Ethiopia’s arable land struggling to sustain productivity.

Timely climate updates boosts Ethiopian farmers’ maize yields by 27%, wheat by 17% – study

The study, which analyzed data from nearly 3,800 households across Ethiopia, found that access to weather and climate information boosted maize productivity by 27 percent and wheat by 17 percent—yields comparable to or even higher than those achieved with fertilizer and improved seeds.

Project gives communities smart options to keep off forest land

Local communities in Uganda are being sensitised to diversify their sources of livelihoods, respond to the effects of climate change and manage the available farmland better

Bugoma Central Forest Reserve in Uganda’s Bunyoro Kitara region is a key water catchment area and migratory corridor for wildlife. It is a source of several rivers, including Nguse, Ngemwa, Lyalo, Rwemiseke, Rutowa, Bubwa, Wake, Sonso, and Waisoke, which flow into Lake Albert.

Livestock sharing model lifts Rwanda’s rural households out of poverty

According to the latest mid-term review by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), PRISM—implemented between 2021 and 2026—has already reached 23,096 households in 15 districts, more than doubling its original early-stage target of 9,827 households.

Through the “Pass on the Gift” model—where farmers receive animals and later pass offspring to other households—the USD 45.6 million Partnership for Resilient and Inclusive Small Livestock Markets (PRISM) has turned livestock into a form of start-up capital for poor farmers.

This intervention comes at a critical time as many farmers in Togo continue to struggle with declining yields caused by depleted soils and limited awareness of their land’s nutrient status. Inefficient fertilizer use has further compounded the problem, making sustainable solutions urgently needed.
