How does a young person become vulnerable to violent extremism and what can we do before it is too late?
Violent extremism does not begin with a headline. Often, there are experiences, vulnerabilities, relationships and circumstances that can influence a young person's path.
For this Sajen Story, we explored how young people get drawn into violent extremist groups, what happens once they enter the criminal justice and correctional system, and what communities can do to prevent radicalization.
We spoke to a magistrate, a community member and a prison officer to understand the issue from different perspectives and to ask an important question:
What can we do to intervene before vulnerability becomes recruitment?
Prevention requires more than security measures. It requires communities that listen, institutions that understand, opportunities for young people, and early interventions that address the factors that make them vulnerable.
