Most people think a leg wound is survivable just a painful injury that you can walk off with time. But the truth is, a gunshot to the leg can be just as deadly as one to the chest or head and it can kill you much faster than youโd expect.
The danger lies in one major blood vessel, the femoral artery. This artery runs deep inside your thigh and carries a huge volume of blood to and from your lower body. If a bullet cuts through it, blood loss happens fast and heavy. A person can bleed out in under five minutes if pressure isnโt applied immediately and thatโs if help is nearby.
But even if the artery is spared, bullets can shatter bones and rip through muscle, causing massive internal damage. This kind of trauma can send the body into shock, where major organs begin to shut down due to lack of blood flow and oxygen. In some cases, fat released from shattered bones can block the lungs or brain a fatal complication known as fat embolism.
And then there's infection. Gunshot wounds are rarely clean. Bacteria from the bullet, the environment, or the torn tissue can quickly lead to sepsis, a deadly blood infection that kills silently if not treated fast.
So donโt ever downplay a gunshot to the leg. Itโs not โjust a leg.โ Itโs a life-or-death situation, and survival depends entirely on how fast help arrives and how much damage has been done internally.
