President Ruto Wanted Raila to Enjoy his old age, Governor Sang revealed.
While appearing on Kass FM’s popular morning show Lenee Emet, Nandi Governor Stephen Sang recounted how members of the UDA were initially angered by President William Samoei Ruto decision to bring Raila Odinga into government.
Many party politicians questioned why a long-time rival was being included in the administration. To address their concerns, President Ruto convened a meeting at State House.
When the meeting was seated,” Sang said, “the President stood up calm, deliberate, and firm. Firmly the president told them:
■We may have differences with Raila, but none among us has sacrificed more for this country than he has. I may disagree politically, but his contributions far outweigh our differences.
■Therefore, I want him to rest. He has endured enough. I would not want to be remembered as the president used state machinery to frustrate and humiliate him. I want him to enjoy life and find peace.
■ Even if he chooses to run in 2027, we will deal with that then. For now, I choose to honour him, listen to him, and let his wisdom guide our country.
Sang described the room falling silent. What had begun as a meeting of resistance transformed into a moment of reflection.
“In that moment,” he said, “we understood that true leadership is about magnanimity. History will judge leaders not by how fiercely they opposed their rivals, but by how graciously they reconciled with them.”
