The Tufunzeni Green Educator Award Winner: Alex Chomba
Alex Chomba is a Chemistry and Mathematics teacher at Kiaumbui Junior School โ and a passionate environmental educator whose work proves that sustainability begins with practical action and community responsibility.
Teaching near Piai, an area bordering the Mwambao settlement where sanitation and waste management challenges are part of daily life, Macharia recognised that environmental education could not remain theoretical. Many of his learners come from this community, and he saw an opportunity to use education as a tool for transformation โ both in school and at home.
Driven by a commitment aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Quality Education, Responsible Consumption, and Climate Action, Macharia has led hands-on sustainability initiatives that directly address local realities. These include tree planting campaigns, environmental clean-up drives, and waste management and disposal programs that have improved hygiene and awareness within the school and the surrounding community.
To deepen learner engagement and leadership, Macharia founded the Mazingira Club, an environmental club that empowers students to take ownership of environmental care. Club members lead waste sorting, recycling, hygiene advocacy, and school clean-up efforts โ and proudly carry these practices back to their homes in Mwambao. Through the club, learners move beyond awareness to action, becoming advocates for cleaner, healthier living.
Macharia has strengthened this work through professional development, including participation in the Akili Zetu, Mazingira Yetu Project by SDSN Youth Kenya, as well as CBE retooling programs by the Ministry of Education and CEMASTEA. These experiences have enabled him to integrate sustainability meaningfully into both classroom instruction and real-world practice.
Through passion, innovation, and community-driven leadership, Macharia Chomba is nurturing a generatio
